i've often wondered this as well. the handful of times i tried to get my head around rigging mech objects, the weight tool had to paint on values as either fully deformed or not; no grey inbetween values.
i think the thing here is to make sure that for each section, you have two bones (one unique joint) so that the different pieces move as independently as possible.
