Between Apple and Microsoft's hostility to it, the rapid adoption of JQuery for webpage animation, and now HTML5 beginning to be used for web video, do you think Flash's days are numbered?
- i_monk0
Sure.

apple/microsoft have hostility towards flash? news to me.
anyway, pretty sure it's here to stay, especially with CS5's ability to publish SWFs as apps for ipad/iphone/etc
- silverlight and it doesn't run on istuffversion3
- Add Google to the list actually - not hostility maybe but as a booster of HTML5ukit
- Huh? Silverlight runs on iStuffmonkeyshine

so wait, do i need to learn AS3 or not?
- just 2version3
- ok. then i'm good.jazmine
- ditto man; as3 is ballzzz/tough...ideaist
- You need to know AS3 for making aps for iphone.74LEO
- as3 isn't that different n worth learning i think. :)instrmntl
- I knew AS2 like 3 years ago, but figured I'd go to AS3 since I will have to relearn it anyway. Is it really harder?graphiknature
- Don't listen to any developers who also know Java and are already OOP savy. AS3 takes months to learn.CyBrain
- Even if you're expert in AS2.It's mostly a rewrite of the language. You can't even code a button the same way.CyBrain

this has been twittered all over the show
i dont think flash will die - prob wont be used as much but at the same time dont you think adobe are working on a way of making flash more accessible ?
- dbloc0
YOU WILL DIE BEFORE FLASH DOES.

@SteveJobs. Google also does not like Flash either. Their "03D" project is indeed hardware-accelerated 3D rendering via JavaScript. No Flash involved.
- do you think people will be willing to download the plug-in?ayport
- nothing can be truly hardware accelerated thru javascriptspraycan
- YouTube is Flash...will they port it to JavaScript? spose they could.WrappedInBooks

I don't think we'll ever see it go away, just evolve.
We'll see it used more and more for mobile devices...and again...banner ads. I know iPhone and ITampon don't support it -- yet -- but they'll be a normal workaround/compromise sometime (there is a way to run Flash on an iPhone already). There's just too much content in Flash already for companies to redo everything in another format. Plus, everyone and their mom's mom already has this plugin.
JQuery can't do 'real' animation either (more than just slides and fades, like character animation and shit like that) and video takes too long to create and creates large file sizes which is prohibitive in mobile devices.
You can create an animation in Flash much faster than you can in After Effects too. Production is much faster. Making video's for ads or anything that's animated is just going to be too costly and too time consuming. You know how agencies always need shit yesterday.
Flash will get back to its roots soon, what is was originally meant for.
- I'm not understanding the Flash vs. AE comparison. Please provide linx/info.dMullins
- Speaking of animation production time...fyoucher1
- yes... flash's animation roots are good... the re-invention of the browser through AS3 code-o-rama isn'tvaxorcist
- also scaling up vector based animations has its uses...SlashPeckham

@ayport If there's a "killer app" for it then yes. Chrome does automatic background updates so if it's not pre-installed it's easy for Google to silently add it in there. Not sure if that also applies to the Chrome plug-in that runs inside IE, but I suppose the percentage of people using that particular setup is rather small.
As for regular IE, Safari, Firefox... If YouTube offered some sort of special content (not sure what it would be... videos playing on warped surfaces?) then users might download the plug-in because the all-authoritative YouTube told them it was cool.
Or there's just straight-up advertising. Google has the money to really push whatever they want to sell through TV, billboards etc. I don't think I've ever seen a browser plug-in advertised that way, but if they wanted to I'm sure they could. Additionally because they dominate online text-ads they could use that as well.
Will people download 03D if Google decided to push it? Not sure. But you can certainly make an argument that if Google wanted to force a plug-in on people they could.
- stewdio0
@spraycan. Google O3D does indeed support hardware acceleration. The plug-in installs its own Javascript interpreter to accomplish this. Read more here: http://code.google.com/apis/o3d/…

- & they miss their sf officesversion3
- i miss adobe vs macromedia competing for our attentionSlashPeckham
- I miss saying Macromedia Flash.
Adobe Flash sounds shitty.shplashtik
- SteveJobs0
let's put it like this. adobe/macromedia have spent years working on flash os/browser integration and have substantial market penetration. their product has an extensive api which will probably grow to meet the demanding needs of game development and this is no small task. have you ever done any OpenGL programming? DirectX? It's going to take a competing technology a long time not just to develop a formidable alternative, but also a lot of time and money marketing the technology just to get where Adobe is today. And by the time they do, Adobe, who will have been watching their competition closely along the way, will be further along with their own answer to those competitors.
- chrisRG0
is it just me or is this a deja vu thread ?
- SteveJobs0
btw, i am not biased towards adobe in the slightest, this is just my objective opinion.
- ukit0
Just hard to ignore the fact that every major OS-controlling company (Microsoft, Apple, and Google) is now actively working to move away from it. That may be a difficult barrier to overcome in the long term.
