armsbottomer, no offense, but that's not a very good argument, especially since you're still learning java. microsoft and adobe have both moved their technologies and respective languages in this direction for a good reason. i'm not going to go into a full-on argument on the many reasons why an object-oriented language is far better than something like javascript for games and applications. i'll leave that for you to research, but suffice to say, almost all big companies understand the value, and have invested a substantial amount of time building massive libraries and frameworks around these technologies. it's not going to go away, or simple be replaced by something simpler that a novice developer can pick up in an afternoon.

Flash not on the iPhone / iPad:
Here are my thoughts on that...
Apple just bought Quattro Wireless (mobile advertising). Currently, on the web, Flash Player is what is used to serve rich media ads. Whether it be video, those overlay ads you see, or little mini commercials made at 40k...99% of those ads are delivered in Flash, a piece of SOFTWARE made by Adobe. Software is where all of the money is at. Now if Adobe Flash Player could run on an iPhone or iPad, any company could make a iDevice compatible site and run ads made from Flash to generate revenue. Maybe Apple wants a piece of that. Maybe their making their own proprietary software to deliver ads specifically on their devices. In a few years, just about everyone will have an iPhone or iPad (well, that's what Apple is banking on). That'll open up a new area in advertising and advertising is BIG money. Move on over Adobe. Apple controls what goes on their devices. They want a lil' piece of that Flash action.

the death of flash has been talked about for years. just like any other tool / software package, flash will evolve as user needs / developer needs change. flash has more uses than just video players on sites, so an HTML5 video tag isn't going to kill a plugin thats installed on basically every computer in the world.
every computer except an ipad that is.

@SteveJobs
first, i'm still learning lisp, i know java.
second, i agree with your statement.
third, in my original argument (if you reread it) i said that as3 WAS better for game development.its just that i despise the fact that people consider languages that have been poorly implemented in the past (javascript), to be shitty languages in the present.
so just to clarify, we are both making the same argument.

I don't know much about HTML5, but I like the idea of a competitor for Flash. I have never really liked Flash, although I of course have had to use it for animation and so on. I would much rather use AE to create SVG animations for HTML5 (I just made that up).
On the other hand, i feel the same way about Apple. I love it that Google is going to give them some competition.

"Brilliant business move, imho, but he did kill an industry and send well paid programmers to the streets."
That coasts on the whole "create jobs" as a goal fuzzy argument.

@spraycan
i know many people that share your opinion, and while its entirely valid to take that stance, i personally don't agree. i use to hate languages that i just didn't understand, until i started playing around with them a bit more (i'm now quite glad i gave them a chance). however, there are instances when i find java is the right tool for a job, and appreciate it.perhaps you might consider giving languages outside of your comfort zone a shot, you might just learn something new.
cheers.

No matter what, i realy enjoyed making things on flash. Websites, animations, presentations. I was utilizing it with After Effects a lot. Tehy killed flash they killed my joy.

@stewdio. its great to hear that you agree. i feel that certain parts of lisp will take me a long time to understand (some i probably never will), but so far its been lovely to work with. i may never see the proverbial lisp light (from what i hear its like being able to see the matrix), but its really bettering my understanding of programming (i'm mostly self taught, so i have A LOT of bad coding habits). also, picking up some lisp seems to have changed the way i use javascript (much for the better). i'm still at a "dabbling" stage with lisp, and may never get past just that, however it's been a great learning experience.
clojure is great! its easy to access the java language, and since you're working with lisp, you can even do things like dynamically change variables while running a PApplet (very cool for quick changes in processing projects without recompiling).
right now, i'm running clojure with aquamacs. there's a good tutorial here that can get you setup with emacs/slime/clojure pretty fast: http://yusupov.com/blog/2009/bas… . there's also a great book in the pragmatic programmers series called "Programming Clojure", its been extremely helpful.
i think i actually stumbled upon your blog post about jist a while back, which i think is awesome. i totally agree that javascript is deceptively named, and thus misused. i actually used to hate it when i didn't know how to use it properly. however, after learning some lisp and more about programming in general, its nothing short of a pleasure to program in javascript.

hey, Adobe's just finally being able to get a decent player for mobile devices, after 3 years from the 1st iPhone was released, and I believe this player 10.1 is not even out yet, so yeah, Apple was being right about it, this piece of software simple didn't existed
