I also notice sometimes i think designers are a good rational thinking bunch but a lot of you are just bored sneaker-wearing skater kids, aren't you?
as in: not very smart?
or is half of qbn just using too much drugs?
^ also makes you a mental idiot, namely.

I can see how everyone wants the ship to be utilized for the aid as much as possible (like providing on board medical care or shelter), but face it, such wishful thinking may lead to a much worse consequence for every party involved. Let me set up a scenario here: the ship has been turned into floating clinic allowing locals to use its facilities for treatment and shelter. Sounds good, isn't it?
Here's a real world for you: people storm on board the ship, passenger's security may be jeopardized, looting may happened, not enough security to get the situation under control, many may attempt to be a stowaway, riot may occurred when supplies run out, ship may become unsanitary from human waste and disease without enough cleaning personnel, ship's interior may be damaged and will require extensive repair until it's fit for cruise passengers again (causing the loss of passenger revenue while under repair and loss of jobs).
When weighting the needs for both parties equally, the intention for the ship to not be used for on-board aid station is justified. They did their best to provide through supplies, local business spending and donations while maintaining a reasonable business bottomline. As for the passengers "having fun on the beach," this is the case of the company showing the honesty by giving the passengers what they've already paid for. It's a disgusting image, I know, but what else can they do? Lock themselves up on a ship? Being sent to disaster area and face danger and uncertainty? Everyone has a duty, and for cruise passengers, their duty to be a passenger is perhaps the best for the situation."

Fucking losers
_____Kind of disappointing from a fellow Dutchman no?
You are simply trying to be moralistic, while a possibility could be that if the tourists did not come at all those people who still work and are still safe and sound would also loser jobs and thus stability?

Seriously, I wonder in Microsoft makes more than the Haitian GNP?

The entire island wasn't destroyed and it would seem the incoming money would help build places for the displaced to go.

jesus, kids, i do agree on the moral point of view, but fucking learn not all the people are the same.
some people will not feel comfy there, some will. as long as this ship is not in the way of things and hopefully is in some way beneficial there's not much to be done about it and possibly it's jsut good that there's at least some way of going on with daily business.
Sheez, it is so easy to judge from a distance, no?
How much info do we really have?Maybe i am wrong, maybe not.
The thing is: They have had not much income in any way since France made the nation independent in about 1804. Since then, all went downhill with the economy over there.
While it was colonized it was in fact one of the whealthiest nations in the Carribean.
- janne760
Most chaos was caused by all the fucking selfish dictators that came since independence.
if there was political stability they could have competed with other poor nations in producing sweaters for WalMart (etc) but not even that seemed possible on a large scale.
Like a Haiti survivor said on the news: "They best invade us again"

this is just in bad taste. hold an impromptu fundraiser on the ship. let people donate any clothes, accessories and money, and the boat donates all unneeded food, blankets and supplies. when you dock unload it all and have the red cross hand it out to the people. then gtfo.
- < that probably would have been the best press they could have hoped for. but instead...sigg

i'd rather take a cruise to haiti right now than a flight, all i'd do is take pics and buy food.
- version30
Afghanistan was bombed this morning as well. 8 dead. should i not care for their loss as it is not as large as Haiti? maybe right now Haitians can accept help in no matter what form be it large or small.

well this article just points out a huge social irony...similar in tone to the bank bonus anger....millions suffer while the rich play.
And hardly any of the money spent at most of the resorts in the Caribbean and Latin America actually stays in the community. There was a study done on this in 2004 (cant find the link, sorry, i think it was this; http://www.springerlink.com/cont…) ...
Costa Rica was ranked best with something like 20% of ever dollar spent, actually ending up in the local economy.....Hati was the lowest, with something like .1% contributing to the community. If you stay at a American or European owned resort, eat food brought in from over seas, drink foreign bought water and drinks, and all the workers are paid a pittance...what positive contribution are you actually making to the local economy?

What's this?!! I'm overwhelmed by realistic rationalization! There's more logic in this thread than knee-jerk emotions... although there's plenty of jerking going on too...
