Showing Old vs New Logo

We are updating a portion of our site at work, and someone is suggesting we show the old logo (which we had nothing to do with) vs. the new logo suite (which we created).
Personally, I think this is silly, but I can't think of the right way to tell them this is not a good idea, without saying, "This is stupid. Why would you show someone else's work in your portfolio?"
Please help.

excuse 1 :
"if the old logo is bad, then they are chances it affects the quality of the overall content we want to show"

i think the before and after is kind of down-market, like those banners for muscle builders.

excuse 2:
It will show our bad judgement in having the first logo done in the first place.

excuse 3:
What if the original was actually better?

excuse :
Never show a negative!

excuse 4:
What if the potential client ends up hiring the people that did the first logo? taste is subjective.

show the process, that's really what you are selling.

most clients have no taste... they'll probably like the crap old one better if given a choice.

The only circumstances in which I would show the old logo is if I singled the project out as a "case study."
The preface for the case study would be that the client was unhappy with their current (shitty?) identity and approached the firm for a redesign. That way he gets to show it and you get to point out, in writing, that the old logo was not working. Win win?

dMullins,
Happy new year you chump-ass-bitch. ;)

You can give people a laundry list of reasons why not to show the old logo. But they still may never understand what a shitty idea this is.

Your mission is to improve their design. Which, inherently, means eliminating the elements that are not so good, i.e., the old logo. Therefore, don't show the old logo. Show the new, good stuff. With a little sex.

Excuse 5:
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so, because, uh, some... people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and... I believe that they should, our education over here in the US should help the US, ehr, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children...

Excuse 6:
The logo defines the company. If you show two logos it says something about the self-confidence the company possesses. (i.e. the company doesn't know what it stands for)
