If I could buy it tomorrow I probably would. but then again, maybe I would just put a tiny more money in it and buy a 500d.

Yes. Love mine. I only regret waiting as long as I did to buy it.

It is a good camera. Consider the D-LUX 4 as well though...
- bigtrick0
yes. do it. i had an lx-2 which was really nice until someone stole it. the lx-3 is much better, i hear.
(also, fuck the sigma dp-1, which i have as a replacement for the lx-2)

can someone explain does it do shallow depth of field out of the box? Like a 2.8 or 2.0 apature? I want a small camera that can also do nice portraits. I saw some flikr pics like that, but wasn't sure if it was mod'ed out of the box or anything.

Yes, yes, yes - and forget the D-LUX 4, unless you have (a lot of) money you don't need... =] Currently the D-LUX 4 is something around US$699 and the LX3 is US$449...

I might have to get one of these as a xmas gift to myself!

A couple things about the LX3 that should be mentioned:
1. Having such a wide lens in a small form factor, the lens suffers from quite a bit of barrel distortion. The LX3 compensates for this by correcting the distortion via internal processing, so that the resultant JPEGs look straight.
I'm sure this is common practice in other small cameras with wide lenses, but in the LX3 the issue gets highlighted due to its support for RAW. Unless you use the bundled RAW software, which can correct the distortion similarly to the in-camera processing, your RAW files will need to be corrected manually.
2. Currently, 3rd-party RAW support is sub-par. PS/Lightroom will probably requires adding extra steps into your workflow, and Aperture support is non-existent. I believe this is due more to Panasonic's choice of container format than Adobe/Apple's desire to support the camera.
You'll only care about these issues if you plan on using RAW. Otherwise, great camera.
- FWIW... Have shot nearly 1000 RAW images with my LX3 - never corrected any of them... all/any post work via PS CS4...********
