iPhone app idea

OK, I have a good friend whom I've known for years who's recently become an iphone app developer. In the past year, he's produced apps for a few top tier companies, so he knows what he's doing.
We were IM-ing back a forth a bit a couple months back and I mentioned how an idea I had would make a good app. He never really addressed it at the time, but a few weeks back he calls me out of the blue wanting to discuss my idea. We set up a meeting with him and his biz partner and go over the whole thing. They will build it and I would like a hand in designing the ui.
The one thing we didn't discuss is money. They will be doing the entire build and have yet to get back to me about contributing my services to the ui and design. They've actually been out of touch completely, which is bothering me. It's my idea overall and they acknowledged that. What should I pitch as reasonable for my cut? It will be a paid app with different price points. Should I get a percentage of sales? If so, what? 20% pops in my mind but I really have no idea.
It's also tough because he's a good friend but he's been out of touch and now I have to broach this subject now which is a bit uncomfortable.
Ideas?

ukit, that's the thing, I'm not putting in equal time, at least they aren't letting me at this point. I think this app can really make a bit of money, not millions, but a bit, and I want my cut. While the friendship is important to me, if they are going to try to cut me out then fuck em - I'll take my cut.
I just need to have this conversation with them and I want to roughly know what's reasonable to expect and pitch as far as my %.
- dude i was going to call you back and offer 50%, now after reading that, fuck u im stealing your idea********
- actually Becca sound more like a chick than a dude.dbloc
- YOUR percentage? They should be fighting for THEIR percentage of the sales. Jesus, this is frustrating.monospaced

Hmmm...I guess I'm a little confused. It's your idea right? So it seems like it would be you offering them the cut instead of the other way around.
- but without each other, this app is nothing.doesnotexist

Right, it's my idea, but they'll be doing nearly all of the work building it.
52% sureshot? Sure I'd like that but I want to be realistic while not undercutting myself. I think that'd be a hard sell.

40/60

- since programming it takes a little m ore work, but it's your concept and design.dbloc
- dbloc0
so what's the idea?
- ********0
Well you didnt have them sign a non disclosure agreement so I bet they take your idea and run with it.

is it a social networking app?

you should ask what they think is reasonable first. the concept is the most important part. there are tons of iphone apps out there that may have been developed by superb programmers, but without a novel concept, they're just iShit. i don't know what you should pitch, but i do know that 20% is selling yourself short (by alot).
- I appreciate that, as well as all of the other helpful posts here.becca2

I'm thinking 40/60 is on the mark. Thanks everyone! Will let you know how this progresses.
- hope it works out for you..let u know when it's done.dbloc
- uuhhhh...no, you should get closer to 70%monospaced

Obviously you approached this all wrong.
"They will build it and I would like a hand in designing the ui."
You're auditioning for a job with yourself?
Bottom line, you should have never let them start working on it without getting an agreement down on paper. Definitely do it now before they get too far into it. I think 33/33/33 is your best bet given that it's an even split and doesn't need to be justified.

If they're used to developing top-tier iPhone apps, then they are bringing sales revenue already. That being said, it's YOUR idea, hence, it's YOUR app. You are hiring THEM to execute it. Therefore, after Apple gets their 30% for a sale, you should get the rest and give a similar percentage of that to the developers. Basically, you should run the show.
