Anyone watch this? My thoughts:
- Matthew Collings - the only sane art critic in Britain today.
- The show lost credibility the moment they mentioned "Mr Saatchi wasn't going to appear on camera". Too busy, too important, too up your own arse? Maybe he saw what an idiot Stark looked in that other programme that was a bit similar. Which is it?
- There looked to be a few interesting artists in there amongst all the usual shite.
- Will it convince anyone that Art has any worth or anything new to say?

yep i agree - love Matthew Collings. Thought it was a good programme. The Chinese girl (I think she was Chinese) looks like the favourite to me.

"do you want to sell sugarwater for the rest of your life?"

I thought it was interesting. I generally agreed with the selection except for that pretty girl with the bob who is either having a laugh or is arrogant enough to think she deserves to be there.
I think Saatchi's decision not to appear on the show was wise. He's the top dog and doesn't want to undermine his position by camping around on screen like Alan Sugar. It would compromise his integrity as a major art patron.

wasnt worth watching then ?

"pretty girl with the bob" - my first thought was that she is a ringer. she looks like she's been to acting school and is way more self aware than the others.
actually, my first thought was i wanted to touch her bits.

they were all twats.
the magnet sculpture was a nice idea but all his work was the same, just messing with bits of machines. He didn't really know why he was doing them.I liked the commercial artist who did paintings to commission. He was the only one who wasn't pretentious, he just wanted to paint on his own terms.
None of them could draw though, interesting that these days you don't need to be able to master figurative art before you move on, you just go straight into video installations.
As an example. Picasso drew/painted these when he was 13/14, these guys can't even do life drawing in their mid twenties:They all seemed in such a rush to get somewhere without knowing why they were doing it.
- Of the thousands of painters in his time, he was in the top 1%.dMullins
- yeah I liked the magnet dude toorascuache
- Yeah the inability of most to draw from life baffled me too.ximeraLabs

I agree about the commercial artist being strong, I just wonder if he'll have his own style.

This program made me angry.
A whistle hanging from a handle? Are you fucking serious?

But really, how much credit does Tracy Emin have? She's bashing seemingly 'mundane' proposals (OK, granted, some are ridiculous) but what has she REALLY done that is of merit apart from the 1 or 3 pieces that made her famous?
- +1 She was a pissed up waster that got lucky.rascuache
- umm actually she has a huge body of work, I guess the Daily Mail hasn't featured those.raskolnikov

Currently BBC iPlayer TV programmes are available to play in the UK only.
Crap. I wanna see it. Anyone in the UK grab it and zip it over?
- I can watch US programs here by modifying the headers in FF will that not work for UK >US?Dancer
- Connect via proxy...It may take some time to get a viable server but I've done it before.

Not only were the "ideas" tenuous at best, the standard of finish on some of the installations or whatever was fucking shocking.
However, I think if I can keep a handle on my rage, I'll probably stick with it.
I'll enjoy watching these retards try and fabricate on the spot the non-existent "motivation" behind their god awful work.

the old can't draw debate rears its ugly head again...
- it's a relevant debate, draw first then move on.BaskerviIle
- I agree with Baskerville. Anyone who's been to art school will tell you: Drawing is fundamental. Period.BRNK
- I didn't go to art school and Drawing is fundamental. Period.bzsaw

I thought Emin's explanation of why drawing is important was bang on.

The art world is bullshit .. arbiters of taste deciding what will have value, so people with too much money can keep their money safely invested.

Good antidote for this programme is 'The Mona Lisa Curse' by Robert Hughes (did that book Shock Of The New). Probably my favourite show in recent years.
Talks about the ridiculousness of the art market and it's purpose, how it drives educational systems to churn out artists to feed the hungry machine (ie. School of Saatchi), and how it will end up eating itself. This show pretty much proves how the art market tends to simply fuck things up and ultimately this show is advertising for Saatchi and money in the pockets of the powers that be.

ps.
If School of Design was poor (even Starck ended up rejecting the winner from working with him), this show should be the final nail in the coffin of the Simon Cowell format transferring to visual arts.
