I'm new to the photography world, whats good?
Should I get the Nikon D40? Seems to be what everyone recommends.

what do your friends have? do a lens share like my friends and i do, what can you rent more of cheaper? what brand to you want to support? a starter camera can be a nicer camera. they all do more or less the same thing. get something full frame with a manual mode. video is unimportant.

yeah i dont care about video and i dont like the idea of renting.

so if your local rental supplier has more canon in stock over nikon that could be a factor to think about

i rent a tilt shift every now and again for about $15 a day, better to do that than spend the $1700 tp go buy my hobby lens, but my (old) renter doesn't have tilt shift for anything except canon, worked out nicely for the both of us. i could pick up local and usually got an extra few hours or day out the rental.

you will need to put all these cameras you've narrowed your choices down to in your hands, and see which one you prefer the feel of. i would consider looking into a gently used d40, d80 or d90 if nikon is your preference. then some decent glass and you'll be set.

- you must be loaded....Laurent
- that would be a good starter camera ;)version3

D40 still on NewEgg, considering pulling the trigger.

i played with D40 and D60 when i just started too. with in 3 to 4 months i felt like to need a better camera already. seriously go with D80 or D90. they will last longer.
D90 has video, might as well. it's better to have it and not use it than don't have it but need it.

i'm sorry, and i feel this almost turns into a mac vs. pc thread...but have you considered canon? the 20/30/40D? please consider it. they really are pretty amazing. especially when you jump to the magnesium body type and the super-quick fps.
- but obviously if you already own nikon lenses, this is a non-issue :)lvl_13

I've just purchased one of these a few days ago, so far very happy. Did quite a lot of research and am confident this was the best camera for the price range... (under $1,000 USD) If I could afford a little more I would have gone for a Nikon D90, but my studio also has a canon, so I can use their lenses from time to time...
