yeah more info on the type of boards he makes...
old school you could do a trade gothic condensed nice and tight...
new school, geesh, I dunno, avant garde and do some actual designing with it? I would pick something utilitarian and get to work on it and make something new with it.
- He has started making boards in his garage as a hobby.... wooden, typical fibreglass longboards and fish.ali

knockout (h&fj) is perfect for emulating all those old school surfing graphics.

oooops I'm dumb, longboard....
trade gothic set lowercase could be a good starting point, any compressed font with a little style...what about that public font that was on here the other day... I like that thin funky one someone showed above, looks different...set that font or some other thin and really open/wide font with the letters overlapping...

Bello would work for a longboard brand. Could be quite nice, in fact.

What's it going to read?

Also as one or two others have said, if it's sort of a classic retro look they need, I'd set the logotype in a condensed grotesque, such as Titling Gothic. Find it put to great use here:

Also, there's a fairly nice condensed sans that Surfer Magazine started using for headlines recently. Not sure what it's called, but I bet they'd be happy to help.

Knockout could also work.

Have you any imagery for us to take a look at. Anything you've tried out so far?
