I can see the race card and gay card getting pulled now more than ever by lawyers.

... not that there's anything wrong with that.

"...help protect our citizens from violence based on what they look like, who they love, how they pray."
Yeah um, can we just try and protect EVERYONE from violence? Based on ANYTHING? Like dbloc pointed out, there'll be a shitstorm in the court room...

I'm 110% for human RIGHTS (be you gay, black, centaur, or a gay black centaur), but doubling someones prison time doesn't make any sense to me... just seems like they could do better.
- Or a yellow and green transexual manbearpig, y'know, whatever.ismith

$680 billion for 'defense' and more reasons to put people in jail for longer. Progress!
I like how he chitchats about defense spending reform a little at the end.

Another bill removing a small freedom in a way. The laws are enforced by those in interpret them. Meaning, theres the way you see it, and the way they see it. Sooo, a drunken confrontation can turn into a hate crime.
When I am a strong believer in some motherphuckers need to get their lip busted.

I can see the race card and gay card getting pulled the next time a another minority or gay person is dragged through the streets by a chain around their neck or tied up and lit on fire, I agree!

I've never actually seen a 'race card' or a 'gay card'... I wonder what they look like.

Laws will never stop people from committing violence. Laws will also never stop people from having prejudice or ill-will towards groups of people that are unlike them.
Humans are broken, not the laws that "govern" us.
Side note: A little convenient for President Obama that the whole $680B ( for wars he promised to end ) is going to get less attention than the Hate Crimes portion of the bill.

The reason that this even needs to happen is because of backwards localities that do not prosecute to the fullest extent because of their own biases. People literally get away with murder because "that damn (insert slur here) got what he/she/it deserved". No violence is acceptable, but this is a way for the fed to step in and provide justice to families who are hurting who otherwise can't get it.
Sure, like all laws, it will inevitably be interpreted poorly, but it fills a major problematic hole in our justice system and takes control out of the hands of localities. Imagine the difference between being tried by jury for lynching in a backwoods Alabama town, compared to say... San Francisco. This evens the playing field, no matter how backwoods a place the crime occurs.
- I agree with your first part, but I don't think this is a solution. If anything it might exacerbate it...ismith
