Would you buy or spend the money on something else?

if i had the means i would definitely collect art. My wife and I buy 1 maybe 2 pieces a year but they're in the hundreds of dollars. =)

Anything is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, not how much someone puts on it.

Be careful, they could be a John Myatt.

i think if i was rich an original klimpt or renoir would be cool but i would never pay 100 million for one, maybe like 5 mil or something. I guess I'd lose the auction

the way i consume images lately from online and just browsing stock or whatever for a project. i get bored with my posters every few weeks. i couldn't bring myself to spend too much on something that passes me by so fast now.

The super expensive paintings are almost never purchased by some rich guy just to hang on his wall and appreciate. It's usually a group buying the painting as an asset they hope will hold it's value, or appreciate in the near future.
Art prices usually go up around the same time gold prices go up, as it's a sign that confidence in the local currency is waining, and people with money are trying to protect their wealth.
This is also why paintings become more expensive once an artist dies. No more supply means prices rise (if people want the paintings).
and yes, it is bullshit.

I wish I bought more than I did. if I lived in a bigger art market I'd be looking at the newer artists and trying to collect what I liked.
Bought a John Morris drawing for a few hundred $ several years ago on a NYC trip. Recently found out that comparable drawings of his now fetch a few thousand a piece. Not looking to sell because I like the piece so much, but it is confirmation of value in some way. Have about half a dozen pieces around the house that have matured as well, mostly limited edition prints.

I see super awesome work by local artists for around 1000. Wish i had more coin.

Not only do I love art, but I make it and buy it. My best investment to date was a Banksy print I bought for $80 sold it for 9k... that was two years ago. I have a few original Fairys that I bought and have more than tripled my money. However most of my art will never be sold. It's kinda fun to think about the money I've made. In all reality I plan on handing my work down to my kids. I'm sure they'll sell the work to buy the latest and greatest car.
I would like to encourage the designer community to take some time out of your day and make something with your hands. Break away from the Comp if only for a few hours a week. It'll help your spirt. Or, save a little cash here and there and support the arts.
It'll make your walls look better and once in a wile it'll payoff financially.

i'd only spend massive amounts of money on art if it was beardsley's, only because i have a personal interest in the man himself.
spending loads of money on a piece just because the artist is famous or the piece is well-known is self-important fappery designed only to impress others. most of the shit people publicly praise today is utter fucking rubbish in terms of actual beauty in the first place.
there's so much amazing, beautiful work being created right now that you can get the same beauty for a relatively paltry sum
for instance:
picasso = shit
pollock = shitaudrey kawasaki = beauty

if you're talking about just making money like KMNDZ above, that's another issue entirely. you could replace "art" in his post with any other lucrative material good

very true... I'd imagine there are a more effective ways to making money than the art route. I could pile on way more freelance commercial work and make a killing. However nothing will compare to taking a break from the computer and painting something with my hands... but thats me
I would rather be the guy that looks for ways to be creative knowing that the hard work and creativity will payoff... than the guy that looks for the money first and the creative way to obtain the money second.
Scarabin I agree... I'm more interested in now than yesterday... plus Audrey is super cool

I was at an Audrey Kawasaki show before she blew up and I could afford some of her pieces, but then I started to think I could buy a guitar with that money or food...whatever, so I pussed out. I still kick myself today, I really like her stuff. It would be cool to have an original.
