So I got the original British version on DVD, and I can't stand it. The mortifying behavior of the Ricky Gervais character just makes me want to vomit.
I like him in other stuff--I think his podcast is great--but The Office is just too awkward. Anyone else not able to stomach it?

not a fan of the british version myself
- fucking yanksjevad

U FEEL AWKWARD
!Terminal27 - hahaha exactly!!dkmb

give it a few weeks and watch again. i couldn't watch the bastard thing for about 2 years and then enjoyed it. it is unrelenting and not surprising some people actually thought it was for real when it first came out.

then again, if you don't like stuff like spinal tap, best in show etc you aint going to like this much.

I don't like it either. I love dry British humor but just couldn't get into that version. The US version, though is beyond perfect.

The problem with the UK version of The Office is that boss isn't likable. At all. He is just an utter ass, all the time, to everyone.
Which is my biggest acclaim for the US version: they've done a great job of making the boss an idiot, but someone you don't want to see run over by a bus. He's offensive, but not maliciously so.

the US version really took off when they reached season 3 and could start their own true path.
you're totally right though, gervais' character in the UK original is fucking painful and never lets up. teh scene where he goes and does the 'business leaders speech' and song is fucking crushing.

Makes you feel nauseous? Makes you feel awkward? Like you want to turn it off? Therein lies the funny.
[insert surftsation.lu tagline here]
- Oh. Hold on - 'inspiration becomes innovation'? fuck that.detritus
- exactly, that's the whole point..neue75_bold

I find the american version to be so watered down it's just plain lame, but hey, to each his own..

The US version improves on the original, now that is comedy.

people caring is the comedy.
enjoy whatever version you like.
or don't and just continue the 'my favourite is better than your favourite and because of that i'm better than you' narcissism.
i could be wrong.
- Come on spare us the fence sitting crap. If people didn't care QBN would be very quiet.MrT
- people caring is great. the 'my version is better than your's" argument aint.airey
- I'm going to wait until the US makes a new inferior airey that does care then.MrT
- can an inferior copy be made? the bar's set pretty fucking low on the original ffs?!?airey

i dunno....i'd heard for ages about this incredible show 'the office' from friends..'go rent it man...it's amazing'....etc etc....eventually, the american version came out, and my wife and i watched that, got hooked...still love it .....
about half a year or more ago, we borrowed the original UK dvd's and watched them....
ok...it took a while to get used to it, it's far more cringe-worthy than the american show, and obviously ricky's boss character is not likeable at all...and yet....
for some reason, by the end (and i mean, END...right up til and after the final christmas episode that tied everything all together) i was blown away by the show....found it much MUCH better than the american version...
lets face it..they did something nobody else had even come close to...it was truly original, hilariously funny and also quite sad at times...
what started to bother me about the american verison is how its eventually drifted into sitcom world...the characters started becoming slightly more cartoon like....whereas the UK version always kept its feet fairly firmly in the dismal reality it was making fun of.....which to me, makes it a bit better....and the end of the christmas episode....Ricky's character achieved at that moment the same sort of 'i kinda like that guy and was rooting for him' vibe that steve carell gets....i really wanted ricky to 'get the girl' and tell those guys to fuck off.....so it was a perfect ending.... :)

I watched a few episodes of each, found them a bit boring, never made it to the end of 1st season, UK or US. The whole show was a bit sad - the dull people working at a dull place joke for dull people wore off fast.
Extras, however is an absolutely brilliant show, actually mocking The Office mercilessly in second season. I tried getting back to The Office again, having seen Extras, looking for something I maybe had missed - didn't find anything this time either...
- Extras was excellent, the one with Kate Winslet cracked me up,********

Seriously, the American version is sooooo crap it's laughable. Gervais's casting is perfect, and the humour so cringeworthy it makes you squirm... Truly original, genius comedy!
And Finchy! - awesome:

the best scene is when gareth goes home with the biker couple for a threeway. his facial expression in the background of the shot as they drive away makes me cry everytime.
7:58 golden moment.

the UK version is genius -- and the christmas special tied everything up perfectly. brilliant writing.
that relentless awkwardness and craziness of david brent is what made the office what it was... (and damn if you think that's bad, you should see his other show 'Extras')
watched a few eps of the americanised version and thought it was terrible, like a dumbed down cartoon or something. may have picked up since that first season though...
- watch from season 3 onward. it's got it's own vibe from there.airey

I prefer the british version version by leaps and bounds.
The american version is pretty unwatchable.
The whole Pam & Jim "a very special the office" bullshit waters it down and makes it quite lame.I don't find steve carell or that dwight dude very funny either
to each his own I suppose

i totally agree with marychain.
i also think that whichever one you watched first, is the one you like best. one of the best acting moments i've ever seen was when ricky asked for his job back. amazing.
