Oh and if you know any good articles on the subject (new ones!), please share!

Good question. MySpace is still by far the most popular (blegh)
Soundcloud is becoming popular for electronic
I know of dozens more but no good ones really.

Facebook...gotta go where the people are...
MySpace still has some musician activity, but it's getting harder to book shows there... also, not as many musicians are using it as their dedicated source for their music. It's still good to use, and there's definitely more musicians on MySpace than anywhere else at the moment, but it's fading a bit...
ReverbNation links to FB... also, bandcamp.com allows for higher quality streaming...
- sorry, I disagree, facebook will never be a good channel till the site makes an effor to incorporate audioMeeklo

@sigdesign,
Yeah, true, but if all the musicians still are on MySpace, by your own logic, does'nt it make sense to go to MySpace? Don't people still like to split up personal life (e.g. Facebook), music (e.g. MySpace) and proffessional life (e.g. LinkedIn)?

If you are serious about being in a band and doing the grind, you sign up for all of them. MySpace, Facebook, Last.FM etc. It's impossible to rely on just one site.

fyi, i mark ALL band requests as spam, 'cause that's what it is.
i'm sure others do this as well
good luck

A friend is working on http://www.bandzai.com/, a CRM and communication tool for bands, artists, managers, promoters. Going in to private beta soon.

I agree, you should sign up on all of course, but
I'm going to say Myspace is number one by far.
(yet no one visits it anymore)There is no other site that made an effort to take its place yet.
Yes, there are tons of sites for bands/ producers, but not available to the numbers myspace offers at least.I love lastFM and I open an account there, but its not designed to promote bands in the same way. If you dont have a strong following already (my personal case) you will stay unknown for months, with very very few plays, since LastFM relies on other people listening to your tracks before it will pair your music with similar artists on their radio channels, until that happens you will stay in dark for months, maybe years.
Facebook, will never be a viable option till they (facebook) make an effort to incorporate music on their site. You can promote events yes, but not music (not at the level of other sites at least.)
Soundcloud
I got turned to this recently by someone here, and I love it. basically is Vimeo but for audio. Their player looks sweet and you can embed your tracks/ playlist anywhere you want (just like w vimeo or youtube).Because of the drop box feature, a lot of labels are receiving music through soundcloud to sing new artists up, and tons of famous producers have unsigned tracks up for previews, including tracks in progress asking "their friends" for critics.
There is also groups for styles of music, where you can submit tracks for people to listen, its pretty cool. But at the moment, soundcloud does not have myspace numbers, but you can include their player on your facebook page
- thanks for the soundcloud link... looks promising!SigDesign

Meeklo, you are correct MySpace is currently #1, in that all musicians are on there...
I shouldn't say Facebook is the best route to go either, because it's limited to your friends, and you can't just friend strangers and promote to them... but, Facebook does integrate audio in a number of silly ways, such as the ReverbNation tab you can add to your profile (MyBand). Facebook is best for promoting to your friends...
MySpace's days are numbered, though, because everyone is constantly looking for a viable alternative. Although it hasn't shown up yet, I'm increasingly annoyed with MySpace's crazy table layouts, slow page loading, etc... and people aren't checking their accounts like they once did. It almost feels like people are just using MySpace as the default, begrudgingly, until something better comes along...
