mostly it helps, to think things trough before asking for crits. it's nothing worse for everyone to ask for an opinion after a 15 min draft

Let's face it, graphic designers, as a rule, are not the most empathetic people in the world. In fact, they tend to be a bunch of cynical, cold-hearted bastards, and for good reason. Years of toiling away in front of the screen to satisfy some vague artistic ambition. Painstaking hours spent learning the intricacies of things like kerning type, which no one cares about yet alone understands. Dealing with idiotic clients like in the robot video. In fact, it's a wonder 21 people even bothered to answer your thread. So go fuck yourself, or better yet, a dog like Eric Gill.

QBN can actually be very helpful, fair, constructive, friendly and quite intelligent place. It is tough and honest though and I for one like that. If you post a zombo.com or a whiny thread your going to get shot down, if its an honest and genuine thread it usually receives a warranted and intelligent response.

"Timeline motherfucker"
"shut up and post funny pics and hot chicks!! We're trying to be serious designers here"
..and yes, the all-time brilliance of "your work is crap!! I'm so much better cos I work for a totally boutique agency that doesnt make any money but makes cool shite all the time."
There are a lot of a-holes on here who are too cool for skool. I second the notion of encouraging pleasant behaviour

Stugoo's got a really good point - it's all in the presentation of the critique or request for feedback. If you approach the forum like a wanker, you'll generally get treated like one, and vice versa.
tbh, my observation is that it's only noise that there's a lot more of on here than in the old days. I remember it always being harsh (I tentatively put my first crit on here back in '01, knowing then I was about to get shot to shit), or random - but hey, that's the internet.
There are myriad varying levels of competence on this site, and each and every voice that engages in the process has its place and use - it's the job of the submitter to have a thick skin and wade through that which they think is relevant. If someone's just being a dick, it's easy to ignore them. Less so if they've got a point:)
I know that, personally, I enjoy wading in to crits because I find such analysis a good learning process for my own needs. But, I'll readily admit that, despite my years of experience across the field and my own arrogances, I'm nowhere near as skilled as many of the people on here... but I'm arrogant enough to assume that I'm not a complete fud either, so carry on gassing..much like I am here now.

I have never put my work into crit on here. But I do believe there is and always has been sound advice. As Nairn and Stugoo said "If you approach the forum like a wanker, you'll generally get treated like one, and vice versa."
If Rybo approached the board with a little more decorum and respect, then he would of been treated with a little more respect...

You can always say it's your cousin's.

I've always found this place to be helpful, informative, humorous, angry, tedious, varied, repetitive, constructive, male-orientated, puerile, tender, full of shit, full of human spirit, full of kindness, full of shit, full of no-talent arseholes, full of talented, amazing designers, photographers, illustrators and all round good eggs. Just depends what time and day I log on I suppose.

What's better? Hearing 'your work is crap' from a stranger at QBN, or hearing the same thing from the client a week later?

This is me on another forum talking about how to harden your knuckles so to punch people in the face with:

You obviously haven't been to the Mike Giesser thread.

The secret blog thread is a nice and friendly place. Maybe you've just misplaced your invite?

I posted a crit thread last week.
I got the criticism i deserved, and some feedback that helped me along. What do you expect?

I've been visiting QBN for less than a year, and I find this site a great source of information and entertainment. Seems to me that on QBN thick skin and reading between the lines is mandatory.
