i called at&t today. they said the reason for my having more dropped calls than my last at&t phone was because of the hardware. i'm not believing that for a second. they told me to call apple. maybe i need to yell more.

they place you on some deteriorated network?!? the iPhone has a shittier network then other ATT phones? I find this hard to believe...yet I've never had a problem with ATT dropped calls or anything. the only problems i have with this phone is when i update to 3.0 3.1 or whatever, but thats on Apple.

These are comments from the link I posted above. Some good points there:
Actually, it is not a technical issue.
A technical issue would be an error in coding or a broken physical component.
This is a shareholder issue. The shareholders allow (actually insist that) the corporate heads squeeze every last drop from the customer base's wallets while keeping operating costs as low as possible.
Allowing customers to be kicked off cell towers because the towers are overloaded is a calculated risk that the shareholders are willing to take. they will continue in this behavior until something MASSIVE and NEGATIVE happens to the bottom line that makes it more important to spend the money to upgrade the towers and coverage - like a mass exodus of customers.
Unfortunately, people are stupid. That's why they choose the iPhone's "shiny" over Verizon's rather plain (but more dependable) network. The shareholders know that American consumers are a vain bunch and that those vain, stupid customers cannot go anywhere else to get their iPhone fix.
So, you have people that "just have to have an iPhone" and only one place to get it. (Sounds like a monopoly on iPhone service doesn't it?)
People won't wise up. Apple will blame AT&T and AT&T shareholders will demand that the AT&T corp heads squeze those vain, stupid people for all that they are worth (and then some if they can get it).
In the real world, vanity feeds greed. The greedy know this and the vain don't care enough to change.

I'm on AT&T with an iPhone and I can't recall ever having a dropped call or any other problems. I've been with AT&T for several years now with hardly any problems at all. I used to be with Sprint about 5 years ago and had all kinds of problems. I guess it just depends which area of the country you live and how congested it is.

While it is clear that shareholders will demand efficiency, that is true of every public company out there, including Verizon.
Poor service will create a poor reputation, which affects the bottom line as people go elsewhere. It is just bad business, period.
True that they have a monopoly on the iPhone and thats a shame, but that's also business.
I'll be calling to complain about the service soon, as my iPhone sucks lately (first gen, though, dropped many times, so can't be sure it just isn't old).
I've seen no phone that offers the video capabilities that the iPhone does, which is an essential part of my business, so while I like its cool looks, it is the functionality that keeps me there.

obviously there's a price to pay. I was on Verizon for almost 7 years. They had fantastic coverage. They also had the shittiest phones on the planet.

and verizon is notorious for overbilling you.... i was on the phone w their support monthly... getting $300-600 bills when i was barely using the phone.
