Making a Directory of Doctors for a client and not sure what would be a nice clean font to use.
Any suggestions?

How about more info?
How many pages do you think that'll be? paper stock? Who will be the primary group of people that will use it? Size of the publication? will it be some sort of pdf, that people will download on their inkjet printers? or will it actually be printed as a directory/magazine kinda thing?

And do you have a budget for a font? or are you just looking at your system fonts?
- VectorMasked0
and...... will anybody other than you will have access to the file and add names and stuff? coz if this is the case, keep everything simple with like Arial.

VectorMasked....
This is going to be used internally for a Medical Group. They gave me a list of 4200 Doctors across the US.
There will be one directory per state. This biggest State (most doctors) is 317 doctors and the smallest is 4 doctors.
Paper stock I'm not sure what they will be using.
Budget for Font... free is probably the best, but something cheap would be considered.

Mac or PC? I have a couple of nice free ones.

Ok. So they just need printed copies.
If you wanna keep it cheap just go with Arial or Helvetica as they are system fonts.
Frutiger or Univers could be useful too. They are very clean, legible and have not much personality. Their condensed versions could help you out a bit to separate information and play with hierarchy.
Won't really suggest pricey fonts. I'd myself give a legible typeface like Corpid or Corporate S a try but they are very expensive.
- LOL, that's not your actual site is it?Jnr_Madison
- hahaha.

oh and you could check with them if they use/have a set typeface for the corporate stuff. Who knows... it might even be Arial and that could help you decide quicker on your choice.

I really appreciate the positive and helpful responses everyone! I think I like the Sunday night crowd. Well, Sunday night in California.

One other question...
With this kind of a project... how creative should it be? Kinda having a creative roadblock on this one.
Does anyone have a good example of a Print design and is like a directory or "contact" type list?
- VectorMasked0
Don't really think it's a good idea to get "creative" on this one. It clearly is all about usability and functionality.
If you are doing a cover and back and index and there's a few images here and there... your best friend would have to be the grid. Do some quick research on grids (basic knowledge every designer must posses). Look at the content and figure out a unique but usable way of organizing type. Think of columns... how many? 6? 7?It's hard for us to tell you what to do as we didn't talk to your client, we have no idea on the printing budget, paper stock, if there are any images, if it needs to be in bw or if there is some colour, etc... With print the sky is the limit. The budget plays a huge role here just like the actual specs.
This project seems rather simple. Just learn from it.

Quick tip.
if your page is let's say... 8.5x11...... don't draw a margin that is like 7.5x10 or less. It''d be too damn amateurish-looking, lines of text would be way too long, it's be hard to scan and it'd look too busy and impractical.
Can't tell you what to use as i have not seen the content and have no clue about this particular job. But leave around an inch on each side from the edge to your margin.

For more dynamism on your page and grid you can try different measurements on each side of the page.

^^ what Vector said.
Also trust yourself. Get some directory's in your hand - think about what works, what doesn't etc and then why
look into type treatments - why this font/ that font etc
