What's the difference between a Visual Designer and an Art Director??? I noticed some agencies have both of these positions.
- scarabin0
maybe visual designer means the same as "design grunt"?
- yojason0
art director is responsible for coming up with the over all (big) idea and the general look and feel. The Visual designer is responsible for implimenting it

Visual designers designs the visuals and Art Directors directs the art.

Ahhh i see, just a fancy name for the grunts.
- yojason0
not really - designers actually design stuff

Visual designer is the guy who digs the ditch and Art Director is guy who stands by watching to make sure the ditch looks good.
- yojason0
much rather be a designer than an art director

Advertising / fashion - AD generally dont design. They provide high concept. General theme, mood or story.
Design shop - AD do design. They set the tone of the design and designers follow direction.
Advertising / fashion - VD only design. Production pretty much. Execute AD's idea.
Design shop - VD can be AD or there is no AD. VD can provide more detailed solution.
Shop like IDEO - VD can be same level as say ACD. Different track of thinking and mode of expertise.

No art directors where I work, but I'm second to the Design Director. He's the lead on UX/UI, but I work alongside and translate a lot of the finding into prototypes. Plus print stuff, of course. I know that probably doesn't answer your question but the title does have a use.

Visual designer... stupid vague title.
I'm struggling to visualise what other types of designer there are?

Cmon guys is it really that confusing?
Art director is just a step above designer. In some companies they design themselves, more traditionally they guide the concept and oversee the designers, but in general it's the step between designer and creative director.
Visual designer is typically used at a company where you have a division of the tasks involved on a project. For instance, maybe you have an information architect, a visual designer, a Flash animator and a front end developer. In that case the visual designer would be taking the wireframes created by the IA guy and just dealing with the branding and stylistic elements as opposed to the usability and/or project requirements.

Art designer roles are more common in the advertising industry or B2C design agencies.

I think the order AIGA puts it in, when you click on the drop down, is pretty much right. The job varies from place to place but you won't find too many designers pulling in more than the art director at the same job in my exp

Visual Designer is definitely another term for grunt... Art Directors come up with all the ideas and then it's the visual designer's job to refine the idea and make them look good...
- minsukito0
art director is a term full shite. without a skilled visual designer u got no hope. hence visual designer/director
