    Cmon guys is it really that confusing?

    Art director is just a step above designer. In some companies they design themselves, more traditionally they guide the concept and oversee the designers, but in general it's the step between designer and creative director.

    Visual designer is typically used at a company where you have a division of the tasks involved on a project. For instance, maybe you have an information architect, a visual designer, a Flash animator and a front end developer. In that case the visual designer would be taking the wireframes created by the IA guy and just dealing with the branding and stylistic elements as opposed to the usability and/or project requirements.
