You can mask/clip images in illustrator. If you're using it as a production file just make sure the linked image is high-res/production ready and in the same colorspace.

Someone fucked up on some shitty peace of artwork and there are fucking spot colors that shouldn't be in the document and I have to find them and make them process colors.
- max_prophet0
you sound like the sort of person that doesn't deserve help.

easy
make a shape filled with the colour you're looking for
then do the select>same fill thing.

Another question: Who the fuck lays out a package design in illustrator, why not use indesign, thats what its there for.
- you have to be kidding me...hans_glib
- illustrator was made for packaging... indesign for page layout, or something...hans_glib
- you know those names you see when the program starts... well those guys made it...satogami
- I don't know, maybe i'm wrong, but do everything in InDesign. Sure make elements in other programs.syst_m
- not really mate - indesign for multiple page docs and anything with lots of type. illustrator is sometimes better for packaging with keylines etc.jimzyk

pretty sure deleting the spot color from the swatch palette will also convert any colors using it to CMYK...

What about using your Magic Wand tool? With tolerance set to 0 (zero), of course. Simple as pie.

I can see sys_m's point if you are maintaining packaging consistency across a range of products. Indesign definitely makes it easier to quickly update multiple instances of all things print. But that is really step two. Step one is where Illustrator is more powerful, and that is the initial concepting and building. Indesign simply is not bulit to be a creative tool of expression to the degree that Illustrator is.
