In the context you've brought it up in, I feel sort of dirty after watching that.

It looks like they are releasing the album without the support of a record label which is an interesting approach. Instead, they partner with Target and other retail outlets direct.

This and Alice in Chains are on IsoHunt right now
........just sayin

you'd think with nin and radiohead doing all this cool stuff on the internet they'd be able to think of something better than that

IMO the new album is the best Pearl Jam i've heard since vitalogy.
In the context of selling out you might want to look and see how they've also released the new album as a download for Rock Band.Bands have to make money too y'know. I don't look at it as 'selling out' and less a little creative marketing strategy on their part.

NIN and Radiohead are doing cool shit, but aren't they reaching a much smaller audience these days? They have cultivated a niche audience but they are not selling on the level of Downward Spiral or Kid A.
As much as we talk about the web being the new medium, it seems like you still need these big companies to really reach people. Or maybe it's impossible to make it as a musician on that scale anymore.

- i don't think the end justifies the means in this case, unless ALL you care about is moneyscarabin
- Both have huge sold-out shows wherever they go, however.duckofrubber

who needs the media and/or a record label nowadays when you have the internet and youtube?
- ukit0
The problem is on the internet no one reads the ads. You just go straight to Facebook/ Twitter/ etc. Back in the days of TV and radio they could push the content out to you and there was no escaping it.

The only issue I take with calling this "selling out", is that you have to prove that Target PAID them a shit-ton of cash to do the ad (and I mean LOTS, they have a lot of cash int eh bank...), and that it is ultimately MORE beneficial to Target than it is to Peal Jam, otherwise – they are just working the system.

You guys should design because you love it! It's your passion. From now on, fuck salaries. Fuck paychecks. Fuck health insurance, etc, because that stuff is what "the man" wants you to think you need. Do it for the LOVE, bro. For the LOVE of the game. Yeah!

Musicians don't owe any of you anything. Think about that.

I wish I could sell out.

Is it selling out or buying in? Or just getting paid?

pearl jam are a savvy business bunch. they are one of the only bands to turn a profit on every album they've ever made, including all those countless live ones.
