Another photography thread. Couldnt filter out one about space.
Ive been really interested in shooting space for a long time. So tonight i perched myself with the laptop inside and put my canon outside pointed to the stars. I had a lot of trouble finding a suiting lense and even more trouble with correct setting.
Cant really find a proper site for this that doesnt wanna sell me a book rather than show me details. Anyone tried this and could tip me of?
And yeah, im just shooting with the camera + lense right now. No telecopes or anything.

Don't you need to use a telescope too?

digital telescope to laptop..?

a telescope with a camera body mount seems to bee what you need. or a really long exposure to get anything up there.

id like to try everything. it just really hard to get something as clear as possible and with low noise.

Check out local observatories. I'm pretty sure most will let you take photos for deep space images. Been meaning to visit one that's down the street from my place. These are from a grad student in their astronomy department. http://www.howell-ltd.com/Astron…

Awesome, man now you have me interested. Wonder what's possible with Canon D digital cameras with a 30 sec exposure max...maybe there is a hack to get the shutter to stay open longer?
Found this discussion, which may or may not help.

Have you tried on flickr user groups?

If you like the star trails, a tripod, wide lens and dark skies will work. For long exposures you'll need a locking cable release (on ebay for about $20) and bulb setting in manual mode.
If you're looking to keep the star field sharp you'll need some sort of tracking motor, check with your local astronomy club for recommendations.
Any shots in a night sky are going to be on the order of an hour or so
