i don't like the term "sin tax".
i'm uncomfortable with the idea of some random idiot declaring this or that a sin... too religious for me.
call it a lard tax or something

What if they taxed all food based on the (saturated) fat, GI, sugar levels? At least it would be consistent?
But then you'd have to have exemptions for specific medical conditions?
- tgqt0
no...wait..if you are not fat you should be able to snack on whatever.

When you buy an item and it says, two pennies of every one of these sold goes towards some mad orphans you feel pretty good about it....
If the government put a little sticker on a soda that said two pennies of every one of these cans sold goes towards the health of our fat fucking nation. I wonder if it would make you feel better or worse or make folk buy more.

If I were king, I'd simply outlaw all junk food, incandescent bulbs, cigarettes, and organized religion.

isn't it a personal freedom to decide whether you want to be fat or not though?
what should the government have to do with your eating (or smoking) habits apart from simple education?
this kind of government regulation scares the shit outta me. people start thinking that it's the government's role to regulate every fucking little part of their lives. it's so ingrained in them that they get upset as soon as they see an opportunity for meddling...
i want to be able to smoke and eat whatever teh fuck i want, and if i get cancer or fat it'll be my own damn fault, not the government's.

- i heard fat people in the states are costing a lot of tax payer money. tax on soda is just to make it fair i guesspango
- That's the problem. People with poor eating habits cost others. I agree that it should be a personal freedom but why should I pay for that?Josev
- should I pay for that?Josev
- maybe the government should simply spend their money more wisely and caring for fatties wouldn't be a problemscarabin
- should we enforce jacket-wearing in winter because people with colds are costing us? ridiculous!scarabin

where is the line drawn? will we start taxing for daily caloric intake? weekly weigh-ins at the collective with the soda czar?
- chossy0
You have a problem and you need money, lots of soda is drunk in america, tax it make the money you need to fix the problem, the problem is that nobody is going to lie in bed fatter than wholly hell and say well fuck me im enormous but its my own fault I love soda, no they will roll off the bed waddle over to the phone and demand that the government help them out because they are out of breath answering the phone, their choice leads to a cost.
- so who cares if they call? your weight shouldn't be the gov't's responsibiltyscarabin

it starts with soda. once it passes it will never be reversed.
then there will be a tv tax. then a fast food tax. then everything but tofu will be taxed.
then your fucking WATER will be taxed.
would you rather decide whether you want to be fat fat or not and have your life in your own hands or would you rather live in some kinda hell where everyone but you decides what you can and can't do?

In the old days, when people were free, government didn't give a shit what you ate. Actually, America's founders would never believe government would ever discuss how to make people eat more or less of something.
Today they tell you what to eat, because they own you. You are their property. You are thoughtless cattle who work for their wealth, you cannot know what's good for you so the government will decide this for you.
They make you use light bulbs that poison ground waters with mercury when binned. The light they produce is linked to many health problems.
Now they will make you drink more toxic sweeteners, for your own good. Do you really believe it will make people drink less sugary drinks?
Something tells me the whole thing is a war going on between corn sugar companies and sweetener companies.- Government also didn't give huge subsidies to corporations to produce corn syrup either.TheBlueOne

In other countries they make the automobile prohibitively expensive, so the populace uses mass transportation more. And it works.
This is using that same logic, except when it comes to America, all this does is make a lot of money in taxes.
People in America will never change. There is no society in America. There is no brotherhood in America and there is no respect in America.
The guy who runs a multi-national corporation thinks he is too good to talk to the guy at the 7/11. The guy who works the 7/11 thinks he is too good to get off of his phone to take your money that pays his wages. This idea has spread like a virus throughout this country. I am ashamed of it.- what countries?johndiggity
