The TV commercial comparing 9/11 to the tsunami.

How can you compare the tsunami ( and I assume we are talking about the one in 2004) to 9/11?
- gabe0
tasteless in my opinion. they were both horrible, unfortunate events and i don't think any comparisons should be drawn from either simply to make a point. you can't use one tragedy to bring attention to another, especially by making a comparison based on number of fatalities.
my 2 cents anyway

Well, there is a lot of talk about this lately.
..."Recently a major discovery was made regarding the danger volcanic eruptions can pose to entire continents by precipitating what are called "Mega Tsunamis." Scientists now realise that, in the near future, a giant wave of water could swamp the Caribbean and the entire eastern seaboard of the United States. This massive destructive force will be released by a collapsing volcano thousands of miles away. Dr Simon Day , who works at the Benfield Greig Hazards Research Centre, University College London, says that one flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the island of La Palma, in the Canaries, is unstable and could plunge into the ocean. The Cassandra Prophecy reveals that if the volcano collapsed in one block (almost 20 cubic kilometres of rock) it would fall into water 6km deep and create a wave 650 metres tall. This would travel across the Atlantic at about 720kph and would probably be 40-50 metres high by the time it made landfall. The surge would create havoc as much as 20 kilometres inland. The whole of the eastern United States would disappear under 100 feet of water. New York, Boston, and Miami would be totally destroyed. Millions would die."
- what's the possibility of that though? 'cause i mean aliens could attack or the san andreas could rupture, too.colin_s

we live on an evolving and sometimes volatile planet. Any natural disaster is a tragedy for the little creatures scurrying across the surface of said planet (us included) but thats the nature of existence here.
How do you compare that to a man made attack? Retarded.
- It could be argued that conflct via humankind's inate nature is a natural ongoing series of disasters.airey
- I love the 'little creatures scurrying' line btw. Gold.airey
- that could be argued, i agree. But, there is nothing intrinsically malicious about a big wave. it just sucks when it hits a city.baseline_shift
- It could be malicious. maybe the planet hates us.airey

I guess it worked. Were still banging on about it.
This thread is almost there but we really need a 'what about the children' line thrown in.
- MrNibs0
6:30 shows the force behind that thing. 7:38 shows what we've learned.

WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?!?!

Well... despite being abhorrently tasteless the ad does have a point. When 9/11 happened it shut down the entire country, and we diverted the focus of our entire nation to try to 'destroy' terrorism. 8 years, Billions of dollars, and at least a million more lives lost...
The tsunami was a far more tragic event in terms of damage done and lives lost, but it hasn't changed the way we're dealing with the environment. It hasn't changed people's desire to live next to the ocean... for people in America it didn't change anything.
- ukit0
Why is this EC?
Read around and you'll see that WWF didn't actually commission this ad, it was created independently as a "proposal" by some Brazilian agency. Never used by WWF and definitely never run as a TV commercial.
Basically it's being used by people who are against environmental protection legislation in Congress to try to smear and discredit WWF. Not to mention offensive to people who lost friends and family on 9-11.
- CALLES0
what was that rendered and animated in... Electric Image?
- ********0
mother nature is a terrorist

SigDesign "for people in America it didn't change anything." true.
But to be honest (I don't mean to be harsh at all), 9/11 didn't change anything here, just like with the tsunami.
I guess as long as were're not touched directly, we don't care.
