If you're leaving an agency that is extremely busy, is it proper to give warning that "Hey, I hate this sweatshop and I'm looking for a job, and doing the nice thing by letting you know."
Or should I just wait til I get an offer, and give them two weeks (in my mind, not enough time to fill the workflow gap) notice?

Wait till you know and then give two weeks. It's the standard.

two weeks. you'll be fine.

Do not f them over. Complete all your projects before you leave. You don't want to burn any bridges :)

It's the standard, I'm aware.
What I'm saying is that giving them only two weeks to prepare would really fuck them. We are in the middle of three RFP's and two other new business pitches, as well as starting two brand new accounts.

@rson: You're right. Leaving now would eff them over to a point, but the problem is that this is the standard. They are always over-booked, behind schedule, and poorly managed. Those are not my problems.

No matter how shit the job, never burn any bridges and just give your notice in a professional manner.
If you're unclear on the leaving policy, why not just ask them what they need in terms of minimum notice once your new gig is lined up.

It's not your problem to stay just to finish a project. Two weeks should be fine. It is how the system works. They will finish the projects with or without you.

Sounds like you havn't got any firm offers for other work but you need to make a definite statement that you are leaving. If you've mentioned before that you hate it and think it is poorly run and nothing has happened then don't give it a second thought, find something and drop them in it. Mutual disrespect.
If you genuinely feel bad about dropping them in it then you could give them a longer notice period.
On the other hand, you could take the open approach of telling them the situation is ridiculous and you feel you won't be able to continue there. They might give you a rise, but things won't improve, They might brick it and pull themselves together but unlikely.
I don't think it'll be too much of an issue to find someone looking for work at the moment.

Regardless of how much notice you decide to give, wait until you have something else lined up. Telling your employer that you're looking for other work just marks you as a potential problem. Typically employers will just pay you out for the two weeks and tell you to hit the bricks.

You're right Gary. I think the best solution might be to find something, and give my current company the luxury of a 3-4 week notice. The only issue I have with that, is that is another company wants to hire me, they likely don't want to wait a month.
Does that make sense? I don't want to burn this bridge where I'm at currently, but my personal problems are more important than their sinking ship.

Do you people never learn not to post threads like this with your own details in the profile?

hmmm dont cry wolf... in other words dont say that you are leaving if you dont have where to go
- d_rek0
Don't feel bad about it. Two weeks is typical business ettiquette. You'll know as soon as you tell them if they want you to stick it out for two more weeks or not. And don't look at it as 'fucking them' - they will more than likely find a freelancer or someone else in office to pick up the workload if they're as busy as you say they are.
But i would wait until you have something definite lined up before backing out. Having a job you hate is better than having no job at all - that might only exacerbate your personal problems.

If you are super busy during this economic downturn, i'd sweat it out for another 6 months while you find a better job...

Have ye learned nought from the the book of gramme?
- gramme0
chapter 19: verse 12–17
"... And lo, in the fall of that same year Gramme was up for review.
Yet, he went out from that meeting with low spirits and bruised ego. He had toiled endlessly for what seemed like no recognition. His wife was with child. This was not the way he had envisioned his review to go. Surely, he deserveth more he thought. And thus, it was written on the annals of Qoob exactly what Gramme didest think. He asked his brethren on the Qoob whether he should embark upon an Exodus to find another palace in which to serve, or whether he should start his own kingdom; and his questions did not fall unnoticed. His Boss was a vengeful Boss. She did not like to be tempted as such, and She quickly made an example.
And so Gramme was tossed out of Her kingdom, never to return."
This is the word of the bored.

say yes to another job first and tell them as a professional, you'd like to give your current employer at least two weeks to find your replacement, and tell them that you can start in three.
then tell your current employer you're putting in your two weeks.
work those two weeks and take the next week off to get your mind right, relax and unwind. start your new job fresh and kick some mad ass.
