Why not just say "I can't do that for you here because its simply not possible to take a design file from Indesign and convert it faithfully into a Microsoft desktop publishing document... its like asking for a tray of chocolates to be converted into a foam doormat. But what I can provide you with is the native Indesign files to enable you to locate someone who specialises in conversions of this nature"
That fact that they wont find someone to do that will support the fact that you can't do it.
Sorry if this sort of suggestion has already been posted but I haven't read the whole thread.
- I have a chocolate doormat. I also have chocolate footprints all over the house. Wtf!harlequino

If they want to go back and make edits later, they can always come back and pay you to do the job...

I would have to agree with the above. that's why they hired you. If they have updates the *get* to pay a professional [ie:you] to update the .idd file and make sure it prints correctly.
- that should read THEY get to pay a professionalbulletfactory

Putting aside the trouble of doing work out of scope work without pay, it seems like having a system where a pdf could pull in a set of data similar to the way web pages make use of xml data would be useful and not that impossible. In this case, someone wants to make a program do something it's not designed to in the interest of saving a buck.

We have a client that needs to add clients names, addresses and price details to Brochures that we produce. If you leave these places as editable fields in the PDF they can do what they want with them. However you are limited to universal fonts if they want to make sure that the client sees what they see.grymes
Making some parts "form fillable" in Acrobat might be an option, no?How do I make some parts form fillable and also create editable fields?
Thanks!!

Acrobat pro allows you to edit text, wouldn't be enough?
1. They pay for an acrobat pro licence.
2. You charge them for a couple of hour for teaching them how to make the changes (+a little help document you provide them).

My advice is that u charge them for that work, for the same money as you charge them for pre-press layout.
You explain to them that you can't give them exact layout as in brochure. That this layout will be poorer than Indesign. Then you minimize look of layout so that there is big difference in design and for you this to be minimum of work. That's how i do it. Sometimes retail companies have often changes
in their offer and prices and sometimes they need to fill up their range of offer. Then you have traveling agents who carry this sort of brochure for their in house reference and that is the reason why they want it or they wish simply to screw you up and down.
Be diplomat ask then what is this for.
