coffee, Tycho, obsession with detail, love of craft, and the persistent fear of becoming useless. Oh and then of course there's a little thing called a mortgage that plunders my bank account every month.
Also as others said, getting out from time to time. Regular exercise and occasional trips to wander around Borders without any clear agenda. I should prolly get out more, museums and galleries etc.
- swimming and running in particular really clears my head.gramme

I work out in the morning if I have time. Helps me get prepared for the day, gives me energy.
On weekends, I do all my errands before work. Then I can focus on what I like to do.

I just throw on NPR - TAL is good. BBC radio as well.
I find that downloading or streaming podcasts can be a distraction - but if i just stream live radio i don't fuss over it as much. Also on occasion if it's really bad I stop and clean my desk for 10 minutes. It gives me a timed distraction that also helps me stay focused when i get back to the task at hand.
(only works if you suck at keeping your desk clean...)

On the to-do list topic, nothing amps me up more to keep productive and bang out another task than seeing a piece of paper in a moleskine/daytimer with another item ready to be crossed off. and I mean physically cross it off with a fucking black sharpie or something like: "Fuck you, task, I have destroyed your existence."

As cliche as it sounds... Todo lists keep me focused. Anytime a job or task seems too overwhelming and i keep procrastinating it to later in the day, or another day, or another week altogether, i can usually get it done by just breaking it into minuscule chunks and doing it a little piece at a time.
Staying focused is just as straightforward as having willpower for anything else though, really... throw on a good album, cut the outside interference (set your email to check every hour, turn off your twitter client, etc) and you should be good to go...

if you like This American Life, give this a try:

it's more big-picture science oriented, but really well produced and thoroughly fascinating.

only way i can focus is when the deadline in an hour away. up until then, it's all research/development time.
