I know few guys at work made apps. they make about 3-4k a month after Apple tax. It starts to diminish after about 6 months and it goes to about $50-100 a month.

I'm sure there are a bunch that never make a dime

Yes there are. You have about 10% success rate in recovering your investment.
3 guys built about 30 apps. Only about 1 of each was able to make money.

What were the apps? Good?

I've got an idea for one, too bad I have no clue how to build it either. And I'm not even going to bother to crack open a cold can of Objective C
- Hire someone to do it. If you believe in it, be ready to shell out cash.********

I went and got myself the "iphone apps for dummies" book, started reading through it and got to the bit where it says "you need to buy a mac", then stopped.
I'd love to beable to build apps or at least have a good understanding of them so I can design and part-build them then hand over to programmer to build.
Got to get some cash aside to get a mac.If you arent a programmer then the C++ or objective looks pretty hardcore - to me anyway.
Like folk said previously too other hurdles are dealing with the apple processes of getting it ok'd by them before you can even test it on a phone rather than the simulator (in which all features dont work).
If you are just going to be doing a one off app for a client you'd prob be best approaching acompany that does them all the time to save a lot of time and hassle, but prob notmoney - although it might balance out.

I met a guy recently who'd made an iphone app, he was really excited about it and talked to me for ages about getting it approved, and how it's on the apple store and learning Objective C and how he was going to be rich, and how he had investors, etc. etc. Then he showed me, and it was just a list of bars and their address. that's it! a fucking list. didn't even update. no graphics, no logo, just slightly more convenient than a piece of paper.

or
http://phonegap.com/Allows web developers using HTML/JavaScript to develop iPhone apps. Still need the SDK with xCode to preview and test, also have to join iPhone dev program to be able to distribute via iTunes store. Apple were initially blocking apps created using these but I believe they are ow have apps approved.
- Oh and they are free :-)Un
