What would you want to read on the brief?

Useful: better briefs usually equal better process (but not necessarily the opposite)

i would love to see a good written brief someday. most are verbal, incomplete or just shit. i think it's essential to a project running well and being on target.

kind of product focused, but some good info here:

there is no process. it doesn't exist. it is trying and selling. suffering those flash banners till you don't care about the bomb any longer.

In my 10 years in the industry I never got given a brief, they just did not happen. The best I ever got was, do this, likes this but different, here the logo keep the branding consistent?

I had to say it.

It's helpful. Doesn't have to be formalized in a Word doc or anything, but it does help if it's delivered in writing.
The worst is when the CEO, Marketing Director, and VP of Sales are all bickering, not all on the same page, and sending conflicting information at different times. It's more or less impossible to design something "on target" in such situations, because there isn't a clearly presented target.
Happened to me earlier this year. On several occasions I felt like shooting myself in the face.

Do you mean "good grief"?

Well written and clear briefs tell me there's a good chance I'm dealing with a reliable and competent humanoid unit, who will be prompt in their communications and efficient in our dealings. So I dig em.

Essential.
Always ask for a brief. You'll usually get one that leaves a lot of questions. Have a meeting to discuss the brief, ask the right questions and firm it all up.
Why design anything without knowing what it has to achieve?

like grandma always said:
there's no relief like a good brief

Best thing I have seen or have done..
Design a brief on what you as a creative want to see and give it to them.

A creative director once said to me "show me some great creative and I'll write a brief" ... not the official way, but....uh...
but seriously, a good brief is there not just for the designer, but for the account team to prevent things from going sideways, turning into questions of oddball taste from the nervous client who simply doesn't like a color choice or wants a logo bigger... a smart brief is setup to quash random objections
