Real design is about communication and problem solving.
What you're referring to is advertising.
"Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won't. We're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

Nothing pure about carpentry, it's basically tree genocide.

we are all whores in one way or another at some point in life

I read you make your own perfume. If you weren't joking, combine that with your design skills and call all the shots. Then you can make evil perfume.

You've sold your soul to steal others. Grease the cogs of the fat , capitalistic mechanical albatross.
BUY, BUY, BUY!!!!

If you're gonna buy useless crap anyway, you might as well by the useless crap I'm pushing.

part of me just wants to leave the whole rat race and take up an honest profession like carpentry or something, build a cabin for me and my girl, then just just grow pot and make art all day

i'll continue until i can find another paying avenue of expression.
but for now, it's not like employment opportunities are beating down people's doors, and a big change right now solely on the grounds of ethics would be very risky if not entirely stupid.
pay my dues, gain in rank until i can call the shots, then establish something more positive for myself and others

I find it interesting that most people in this business are in touch with these "marketing gimmicks" on a daily basis, sometimes even generating the concepts that will be delivered to the copyrighters to make their magic.
These "white lies" about new products, and why customers need them, and why they are better than the competition, etc..
but we also believe them when we are on the consumer side, take apple's "greenest notebook ever" we swallow that with a spoon and we are amazed by it... buy buy buy...So if you feel bad about this, know that is a huge loop and by the end of the day it will somehow influence your next purchase too.

i don't think design make you evil. more like doing your job makes you evil.

I honestly don't have that kind of opportunity.
But what is that makes u wandering is the question is that one going on your soul, or of this corporation? Corrupted and twisted corporation strategies often reach for those sort of experiences and at end it reflect on their business. If u feel evil, then u know what to do. Use the force to find your inner calm and you will find that mater around your will turn in to your own benefit.

design changed my world.
at least my sanity. finally got rid of it.

his thread should be called 'advertising making you evil'. design can help people and change the world - advertising just makes the masses feel anxious and shit... so don't confuse the two and you'll feel groovy

I dunno dude, maybe you're doing it wrong.. there are many companies doing good, honest and creative work, KesselsKramer being the most obvious...
Maybe you should just try a little harder..
It's always easy to blame clients, your boss and the stunted retard sitting beside you, but eventually, you have to take responsibility for your own actions and approach to your work... Good creatives settle for, what did Boz say, oh yeah — "I created something that appealed to people and made good money off of it"..
Great creatives don't settle, they sell great creative...
- i dig KK's work, but in what way would one ever think of advertising as honest?Coffeemaker

The tooth companies are the worst for TV advertising, it's like watching Paranoia TV, fucking hilarious.

well don't accept those projects then. Simple eh?
Oh wait, you want to make money? More money then you need?
It's capitalism. Simple as that. I've worked with huge corporations and movie industry and car industry and I picked projects I liked for the most part. I can personally hate companies this is my job and I l love designing, creating. Unless it hurts someone directly it's about choice. I do feel happy if campaign is successful not because I made people buy a product from a rotten company but the fact that I created something that appealed to people and made good money off of it. That's what makes it worth while.
It's really a choice. You can take those you like, you can decline those you don't. Ask yourself why you do stuff you do.
You can always go and do something that doesn't make you feel that way, but the fact is that your lifestyle and many other things change. So you can't really have it both ways. Altruism was never profitable.
So if we do what we do and complain about evil capitalism, it makes us kind of hypocrites, doesn't it?

yeah my favourite hated term, which is throw around so lightly in advertising agencies is "creating demand". I mean why the hell do we need to create demand? that just sums up everything that is wrong and evil about capitalism. And it seems the recession hasn't taught anyone anything.. they still splashing out on needless crap, just not on organic food or holidays anymore.

My first full time design job was working in a company that sold software which "intelligently" "chose" winners at the tracks. In truth it was a load of crap and cost thousands of dollars to purchase.
I didn't know this when they hired me, but yes I'm going to hell
