I'm always wary of a company that needs recruiters to find them designers.
Am i wrong?

I've heard of tons of agencies and shops using recruiters. Maybe they have no time internally. No big whoop.
- MrDinky0
No because your internal recruiter does not know everyone

years ago I got a position through a recruiter, and he was able to negotiate a much better salary than I would have negotiated myself

Well i guess it makes sense if they have no time to deal with it internally. But most shops should be deluged with applicants, shouldn't be that hard to find people.

Should you meet with/interview face to face and hand over SSN# and other paperwork inc references before they actually have a gig for you?

Most recruiters are the same assholes as car salesmen and real estate fuzzies imho. No service, no knowledge and no profession but getting money off of other ppl's hard earned cash.

^^ good insight.
I have to admit-- forking ALL of my info for something that is elusive at the moment seems like a lot.@lvl_13, can you tell me more though... Y?

My ex was a recruiter, all her the gigs were huge accounts with sign in bonuses 'n' all that shit, so I always assumed if you want a good job, go with a recruiter, the challenge is being good enough for people like her to even consider getting wasting their time with you. Back when I was with her I just freelanced so I wasn't interested in a full time gig, then later when I was interested, we had already broken up so she was like "go fuck yourself" even though she was the slut that cheated on me (it was a different slut, and yes I like sluts)

are there still recruiters in the sense where their picks matter? my impression of the industry is they go through a database, like mls style. like any realtor they pick you up and present you. sometimes you get calls for the same job. so what power do recruiters have now days?

Time is money. Better to focus on what you are good at than take time interviewing, reviewing resumes, etc., etc. I spend ages looking for my salesperson and eventually hired a company. Just too many headaches and it just sucks your time away.
Getting people to jump through hoops may seem trivial from the outside, but it does inform the owners about the candidate. If you aren't willing to play game, then really, you don't want the job that badly (and wouldn't be a good employee). That's the logic, anyway.
[note that this was for a sales/business development position, design could be different if you are going for talent vs. skills]

Big companies have recruiters on staff. Recruiters can be helpful for finding people like PR people and department heads that are not designers.
In this age all you need to do is search Linkedin tho.
Anyone who signs up with a recruiter to help them find a job when they aren't really high level and looking for a $200k job is dumb.
