That volvo is a clunker? I guess I'll have to save my jetta for the Pennies for Pieces of Shit program

Kinda fucked up the way that the dealers have to trash the car, make it unusable. When all the people who can't afford a new car, even with the $4500 credit go to buy their next car, there'll be less used cars to choose from (though i doubt anyone will have trouble finding one still)

After all the publicity this has been receiving that extra 2 billion won't last another 2 days

I might actually go see what kind of deal I can get after work today..

see all my posts in the politics thread.
what a shit hole of an idea.

does it have to be American, or just a car with better MPG? I don't think it has to be American.

Businesses get tax breaks all the time. These new cars are on average 61 pct more efficient. On average the amount of taxes and federal fees paid are between 3 and 4 grand per vehicle. Close to the amount that the rebate is. Just sayin'

Here people are, complaining when sales increased 3000% because the way it was done offends their Ayn Randian sensibilities;)
You wanted stimulus here it is.
And no, it doesn't have to be American.
- dbloc0
yea I guess it doesn't have to be american. Nice!

its retarded that they make the dealers destroy the engines.

For an additional amount for `Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Program' to carry out the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Program established by the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 (title XIII of Public Law 111-32), not to exceed $2,000,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2010: Provided, That such amount shall be available for such purpose only to the extent directed by the President, and shall be derived by transfer from the amount made available for `Department of Energy--Energy Programs--Title 17--Innovative Technology Loan Guarantee Program' in title IV of division A of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-5)

Basically, this isn't "new money" but an appropriation of money from the stimulus bill. And I would say it was the best example of "stimulus" we've seen yet. It's kinda funny because it is being derided by republicans, who generally love the leveraging of private money with public money. But i guess only when it is going to their campaign contributors and not to the taxpayers.

i've been thinking about this program a lot lately.
i personally think it's safe to assume that the government has (unofficial, secret) relationships with auto manufacturers. with both this and the recent failing car sales in mind, i wonder if this program is nothing more than a trick to get people who wouldn't normally be purchasing a car, to do so, boosting sales and lining pockets that would otherwise be in jeopardy.
...and all under the guise of "making our roads safer and cleaner"
- Not sure there will be much pocket lining, as soon as the program goes away so does the jump in sales.DrBombay
- then say it's for oil people, not auto manufacturers. most of the cars being bought are STILL fueled by petrolscarabin
- which will establish a huge oil-driven user base, extending oil's reign until they can find a new way to fuck usscarabin
- Nah I don't think so.DrBombay
