I did a mix of photography, livesurface and flat for my stuff. In retrospect I wish I'd done more flat... photographing work is really only useful I think when one wants to show paper and/or print textures, or when the piece really benefits from being seen in 3-D (say, a book where the design of the spine is important).
I suppose it would be relatively easy to replace those images of mine that didn't need to be photographed, but it would be a lot of work. Meh.

2 looks better, but if you're going to have a curved, dimensional shadow, then you'll need to distort the page slightly too. this of course would defeat the flat effect, so maybe more linear, lighter shadows are in order.

#2 looks better but the shadows are too big and a bit off.
