I've got somebody who has VHS videotapes of his TV appearances, that we want to put on the web. What's the best format to have them converted into?

convert to DV. then from there do what you please.
any raw dv format will do. your local video house will do that for a nominal charge.

Might as well buy a tv card and record it yourself.

get a professional to get it done right. Dont risk your clients media on a $200 piece of shit.
- a professional to hit play on the vhs tape, and record on the computer?Meeklo
- i have a dslr; this alone doesn't make me a professional photographer.plash
- I agree, and
I have never insinuated thatMeeklo - so back to my comment...Meeklo

No need to be a cock about it, is there?

DrBombay; you're right. there is no need to be a dick about it. it's just your answer is typical to web/graphic designers. the do it yourself/ teach yourself method. that inst the solution to your clients interest.

It's a fucking VHS tape.

+1 for professional digitization. The quality of the final product is going to be all about how clean of a dub you can get off the VHS tape. This means high quality VTR and high quality Video Capture Card. Pass the cost on to your client.
