The steadicam was introduced to the industry in 1976 by inventor and cameraman Garrett Brown,[1] who originally named the invention the "Brown Stabilizer". After completing the first working prototype, Brown shot a 10-minute demo reel of the revolutionary moves this new device could produce. This reel was seen by numerous directors, including Stanley Kubrick and John Avildsen. The Steadicam was first used in the biopic Bound for Glory, but its breakthrough movies are considered to be Avildsen's Rocky in 1976, and Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining.[2]here y'a go. I didn't say Kubrick invented himself.

One of the best segments I've ever seen on 60minutes was about that Garrett Brown guy. He's got like 50 patents on all the crazy camera types out there.

Alot of people don't know that he started off as a photographer, and was a damn good one. I highly recommend this collection of his early work.

I heard Garret Brown was in Mexico having drinks at a bar on a beach and the waiter would deliver the drinks on his bicycle and he had a platform that the drinks were on, that was balanced on the bike frame with weighted bars on each side, and he noticed that he never spilled a drink. So maybe Garret Brown was the first to "patent" and apply the idea to cameras, but not the person who invented it. So it must have been a Mexican who invented it.

Pretty sure they won an Academy Award for the creation/use of the steady cam in the Shinning.
