the concept is interesting.
im assuming its a poker chip, negative space dropped out.
needs some more thought.

i would lose the line between the image and text. also, are the tops of the blocks a different color? if so, i would make it all black.

Looks like the edges don't meet on the lighter shaded part. Possible drop the horizon line and chips a little lower "tighten it up".
Now that I look at it.. Why is the horizon line not completely vertical? It hangs down on the right.

I think there's a lot of potential here. Add another stripe to the left and right, and bring up the text to make it more tighter.

i'd think considering the loss of confidence worldwide in housing/real estate agencies they could do with something more friendly and approachable. and not using a chip, unless he builds/sells casino's.
it's a nice logo but what does it tell me?
- haha, good point. gamble on a house?TINKLDN
- Please shut up.********

I,too, like the concept. One thought I had was to simulate the roundness of the chip by including a cast shadow below it (possibly below the word mark even).

^IMO, no fancy effect on a logo. everything should work only using solid black & white.

The company deals almost specifically with rehabilitation of underdeveloped or abandoned homes. There is zero business to final consumer interaction so the black chip reference (while I do agree with you Janne about having to be sensitive) has a specific meaning here. The group involved are very savvy, very well off, lifetime real estate prospectors and developers. It's kind of sad to me, they get the gambling reference and like it.

Thanks so much for the input all.
I will go back and refine with all the comments in mind. I am going to have to try to live down the complete upstage by TINK > bows in TINKs direction...
I'll post when I get it cleaned up for round two.
Thanks!

I liked the chip / arch visual but as someone pointed out there are a lot of negative connotations associated with the name (gambling) and concept only reinforces that idea. It's especially troubling to me after what has happened with the housing market over the last 8 months. What were your other concepts?
- i agree - but if you call your company black chip, that association is there anyway i guess?********
- Yeah, you're right. The problem is in the name. I wonder what the client's thinking was behind that choice. The idea of premium, I suppose.Josev
- premium, I suppose. I think I'd work with a sophisticated type treatment and stay away from gambling imagery.Josev
- Although I'm still not sure the design can overcome the problems with the name.Josev
- Although, maybe this is an effective metaphor for their audience.Josev
- i agree - but if you call your company black chip, that association is there anyway i guess?

associating buying a house with gambling? ouch! I'd go the james bond/martini/cards/king/queen/ direction instead of poker/gambling imagery.

Is there some mix-up with 'blue chip', which of course is positive?
A certain logic could lead to black chip meaning better still, but then in come the gambling connotations.Speaking as a recent home-buyer, there's enough of an inherent gamble already there thank you very much.

ridiculous concept.

If you are going with the "It's a gamble to gop with us" concept then as Tink did but perhaps adjust the stripes so it subtly forms a letter B or something.

OSFA? Set them straight please???

Thanks for all the input so far.
Update. Not completely sold on the perspective but it's accurate on the new ones. Anything constructive is really helping. This is pretty much my first shot at a logo.
As far as the company goes, I really can't argue for or against them. The concept is theirs I'm just helping out with a logo. I pretty much voiced the same opinions you guys all have and was met with very cordial resistance. I am an ant in the room with these guys. They know their business very well and have made more money than I'll ever see so I'm just going to let the argument die and hope for a couple weekends in vegas with em.
Thanks!
