Subway – Subway II (2009)

Soul Jazz's very own in-house electronic disco group Subway return with their first full length album since 2005's 'Empty Head' set. The list of equipment used to fashion this album includes an enviable roll call of Roland Jupiter 6, Korg MS20, Univox SR55, Roland MKS80, and a Moog Prodigy alongside the usual guitars, drums and tape loops proving that these guys are a fully analog outfit. there's no radical departure from their previous sound, sticking to what they do best with intuitive dancefloor jams and spacey head-music sounding like they could have come from any point between the late 70's and today with elements of NYC avant-disco, Krautrock, German electronics, Radiophonic ephemera and proto house sculpted into a unique sound. Recommended!...

J DILLA - Jay Stay Paid

Pete Rock and Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey (Dilla's mom) have dug into his Dilla's of discs and DATs to construct this further addition to his legacy, including 28 tracks of deep tripping and double dope beats previously unheard by those outside his inner circle. The set's largely instrumental, containing a heavy handful of proper beat nuggets sounding as good as anything you've previously heard from him, with admittedly a very few fillers that may have slipped past quality control. Worry not hip-hop fiends, there's a very enticing cast of MC's lending previously unreleased lyrics to the set, from Doom on the totally prime 'Fire Wood Drumstix' to The Roots' Black Thought cropping up on the incisive 'Reality TV' or Mobb Deep's Havoc and Clan member Raekwon creeping up on the sinister '24K Rap'. The solid gold stuff is tucked away on the instrumental gear though, from 'Stilts' Afrobeat lilt carved up over a neck snapping break, to what sounds like a Goblin sample on the painfully short 'Kaklow' or supremely tripped choirs and swirling beat collages on 'Milk Money', his spirit is irreversibly engrained on each cut. Of all the the recent cartload of posthumous Dilla drops we'd have to say this is our favourite as it explores that innately experimental sound that as often far more interesting than his anthems and had had such a large impact on the post-Dilla skool of beat heads from Dorian Concept to Hud Mo and far beyond.- going through my Boomkat newsletter this morning...neue75_bold
