So this week I was feeling a lil overloaded with stuff at work as well as some side projects I was working on. Even though usually I like to do everything myself I was thinking about subbing out some of the easier stuff to a relatively cheap freelancer.
So I searched the usual job sites for this kind of thing. And damn - I couldn't find a single designer or company that could produce decent quality work or even acceptable quality work. Eventually I just gave up.
So anyways...despite all the angst in the industry about people coming in and undercutting prices, my takeaway was I am not sure there is so much to worry about. Anyone have any similar or different experience with this?

you get what you pay for
what I've seen is people who want to low-ball designers and have them work for nothing like the designs those type of people produce. they wouldn't care for paying more just so it "looks better."

cheap designer = cheap shit.
The competition is those lot who are at the same level as you. but charging a cheaper price. Or they are charging the same price but better than you.

Are we supposed to feel bad for you? If you want something cheaper from a professional, they cut services (project scope) not cost, because they're a fucking professional and they're worth it. Can you do some of the project yourself and cut scope to afford somebody good?

Good freelancers won't shovell other peoples shit. Being Freelance does not equal less talent. I've seen discussions about 'shall i go freelance will it mean i get unexciting projects'...There's a lot of guys who know they're MUCH better than studio people and don't need to do their crap...that's why you won't find them or be able to hire them to do so. Conversely they may just be the guys who win studios good work and produce the stuff that gets various companies recognised.

elevation of pricing > better communication with client > show quality > insist on delivering it continuously > ask a decent fee for what is delivered.
you can be a great designer but to learn how to communicate well takes another 3 or 4 lifetimes..
for me anyway.
