So.. I was talking some shit to a coworker yesterday over iChat and we both wondered if our IT/MIS team were capable of reading the shit we were talking.
Paranoia or whatever..
Do you guys worry about this in offices? Is it ethical for ppl to read your IMs? I mean, you're paid to be there so I guess all of your time and conversations technically "belong" to the company.
Thoughts?

ethics and legality are two different things.

set your prefs to trash conversations. But even then, they can still track you if they want.

^ word.. is it legal for them to do it then??
- doesnotexist0
eh not so much- I think they only look if they think a problem is happening/existing anyways. otherwise it's a waste of their time and probably don't see anything but bs and nonsense............

@doesnotexist - i'll buy that.. but IT/MIS dudes are always so grimy, i can totally envision a few of them fapping off to conversations covered in cheese it powder..

Government compliance rules state that conversations and emails must be logged and stored for a minimum of 7 years at which they enter the record lifecycle. Not sure what the threshold is for how big the company needs to be.

If you're not on a property that you own or lease/rent, you do not pay for bandwidth, or own the PC that you're chatting from, I would say use encryption, don't save conversations. Be careful what you say anyways.

a) Everything at work (email, IM, Internet usage) can typically be legally tracked (check your HR manual).
b) No one has the time/gives a shit.

rippedursite, turn around and carefully look up? see the camera there? on the other end is your boss fapping at the porn on your screen while making notes of your work ethics.
- redant0
even QBN posts? How?
- NONEIS0
Speaking of old school, it's entirely possible to screen record your machine over the network without you knowing it, they won't need to save your posts if they are monitoring you screen itself. And yes, it's perfectly legal.
