Don't work for google?
pfffffttt...
Like that is ever going to happen...
we all work and support google directly or indirectly.Is like apple jacking up the prices of whatever little gadget they put out.. people complain for 2 weeks before its release, but on D day.. everyone is at the line anxious to pay whatever they demand.
sorry, as much as I think they are cheap bastards.. they can do what they want, what are you going to do huh? switch to bing? you will be back in 5hrs.

It's pointless to do anything for Google from an artist/designer perspective. They had a bunch of nicely designed skins for iGoogle and now they just took a shit on them and they're impossible to find among the sea of quick and sloppy artist themes. They prolly didn't pay for those, but made them the main choices.
They might be generating more traffic that way, mixing the crap and the quality stuff, and people just choose the subject they have feelings for, no matter how it looks, but for an illustrator who put in effort into making some fancy theme, even for money, being mixed in with sloppy crap is not good exposure.
And who needs any of that garbage anyway, more people by far will use the default skin, classic on iGoogle, default on Chrome. It's stupid UI design to let people nasty it up.

People are going to have to accept (any day now) that Google is just another corporate giant. They got some good press for the cool offices they let a few of their employees work in (not designers) and the informal motto of "dont be evil" ... but that's all just PR. Google is as bad as Microsoft. As they get bigger, they will only get worse. Stop pretending like they're a good company that cares about anything other than money, because they're not. Move along, nothing to see here. If it weren't for Steve Ballmer, I'd actually hope Bing overtakes Google. At least Microsoft is open about their evilness.

Who cares about some stupid Google chrome skin anyway?
Chances are 99% of people will stick with the "Plain Jane" original skin. This pretty much can be summarized as "Google t-shirt design contest"
I can't really picture anyone saying "oh you did that Google Chrome skin, that thing is sick...the home button looks amazing with that drop shadow and gloss. I also love the bevel you threw on the forward and back buttons.....sick!"

From a web developer and designers point of view, Google is definitely not as bad as Microsoft.
Look at the Google support for open standards vs. Microsoft's crappy Internet Explorer browser which has stifled development of the web.
OK, so they won't pay the chick for her ink splatter art. But on the bigger issues I'd much rather have Google than some other company for the time being.

Although it's pretty lame to solicit work from established artists for free, I have to say that anyone who takes a job without understanding the terms have only themselves to blame.

@designbot + monospaced - It's not platform availability, it's implementation of the W3C standards.
Firefox, Chrome and Opera for instance will support a new HTML 5 tag called Canvas which lets you create bitmap animations with Javascript.
IE8 however doesn't support it, and Microsoft apparently has no plans to because they want people to use Silverlight.

^That's interesting. I just remember reading an article in a PC magazine talking about IE8 and how it would stick strictly to the W3C standards unlike earlier versions. Haven't done much testing myself though.
Here is a statement from Microsoft's own site:
"Internet Explorer 8 makes significant progress toward compliance and interoperability with W3C DOM standards. To improve JavaScript programming interoperability with the DOM standards, Internet Explorer 8 includes many fixes for standards-compliance issues in the implementation of the DOM L1 & 2 Core specification, as well as the DOM L2 HTML specification."The wording they use like "significant progress" is so subjective and vague it's kind of comical. I don't think anyone will use SilverShite even if they try to force it this way.

lol why is ms wasting their time with silverlight, they're competing against Adobe that pushed it own shite plugin on everyone. Microsoft is selling it's Expression Suite bullshit for silverlight, just like Adobe sells Flash/Flex/Catalyst for flash.
MS could have just made a WYSIWYG editor for JavaScripts, HTML5 and other standards, and been done with it. Stupid fucks.

see google just thinks they are being all open sourced and free, you know, the spirit of freeware and all....except that now they are the MAN and have the power (current stock price $416.77)....they forgot that they are now STINKING RICH and other people have to work for a living.....shows an arrogance for sure.
