It's pointless to do anything for Google from an artist/designer perspective. They had a bunch of nicely designed skins for iGoogle and now they just took a shit on them and they're impossible to find among the sea of quick and sloppy artist themes. They prolly didn't pay for those, but made them the main choices.
They might be generating more traffic that way, mixing the crap and the quality stuff, and people just choose the subject they have feelings for, no matter how it looks, but for an illustrator who put in effort into making some fancy theme, even for money, being mixed in with sloppy crap is not good exposure.
And who needs any of that garbage anyway, more people by far will use the default skin, classic on iGoogle, default on Chrome. It's stupid UI design to let people nasty it up.
