So, I'm planning to spend some days (3-4) with girlfriend and parents there in mid-july.
Edinburgh has been already settled as a location to see. Anything else i should not miss when there? We plan to get there by train, btw.

gimme a wee think and I'll do my Scottish Tourist Board bit. Just out of interest though, are you keen on whales and birds of prey?

Head towards Glasgow Airport then follow signs for the Erskine bridge, head towards Helensburgh (seaside town) there you can stop for breakfast & take in Hill House.

Head North on the A814 which is waterfront, hills etc all the way you will pass Faslane where the nuclear subs are kept and the Women's (hippy) peace camp has been since the early 80's. Keep your eyes open for Glen Fruin Rd (great drive) and follow it to Loch Lomond. That should take up part of the morning for you.- from there it's an easy jaunt to the Highlands, Glencoe etc.Mal

By and large avoid the tourist attractions, the best things about Scotland are the relatively wild and unspolit countryside and the quality of the local produce. Some of the locals still affect to have an anti-English attitude but there are racist idiots the world over, Edinburgh is largely English anyway. Visit Valvonna and Crolla if you have any interest in food at all and don't forget to go and ask the Time Team questions about the dig in Princes Street, Shandwick Place, Leith Walk ...
