speaking of bikes...
i'm not a bicyclist, i haven't ridden one since like fifth grade.
i do however need a bike for burning man. i was gonna get some back-of-the-shop junker 'cause i figured i'd tear it up on the playa, but now i'm thinking i want one to do midnight bike rides and trails and crap.
seen anything that's cheap but not hideous?
price range is up to US $500.
i'm currently looking at this one ('cause $300 is very affordable):

i like these, anyone have any experience with forge bikes?

Look around in your local classifieds for a used mtn. bike. Stick with the big names, trek, specialized, giant, etc.
$500 can get you a decent trail worthy bike, maybe 3 seasons old or so.

Beach Cruiser! You're going to a pretty flat place! Used Beach Cruisers are cheap and there's almost nothing to go wrong and get fouled up with sand!

second hand is surely the way to go!

there are bike shops that take used bikes and fix them up and resell - very economic to get a great bike (lightly used) at a discount - The wife and I are both buying bikes tomorrow from just such a store.

i already ordered a set of these for it :)

scarabin. don't order that bike. anything full suspension (front and rear) and less than $500 is gonna be junk and weigh a ton.
@ 500$ you're way better off to buy a hardtail and perhaps consider used market. check out trek and giant for good value for your $.

check pinkbike / california listings:

cheaply distributed bikes are also put together by novices.

the costco ones are throwaway bikes.
buy a decent one used on cl. or the haro above.
a good place to get one is a rental shop, they have decent bikes and maintain them, and sell them at the end of the season. you can get a solid bike for cheap.

cuke is right, if you are looking to spend 500 bucks, DO NOT GO TO A BOX STORE!>!>!>! (target, costco, biglots, walfart, kmart, etc...)
you might as well just eat or burn your money, their bikes are made of lead and Chinese newspapers.GO TO A REAL BIKE SHOP, you will be glad you did. They are staffed by people who actually know something about bikes, and I'm sure that you can find a decent one for 500 bucks, they always have something.

xcarlx has a great point. hit up a local bike shop. the bike shop a few miles from my house was having 2008 clearance sales, they were selling 2008 model Specialized Rockhoppers (lower level models) for $470
