cuke is right, if you are looking to spend 500 bucks, DO NOT GO TO A BOX STORE!>!>!>! (target, costco, biglots, walfart, kmart, etc...)
you might as well just eat or burn your money, their bikes are made of lead and Chinese newspapers.
GO TO A REAL BIKE SHOP, you will be glad you did. They are staffed by people who actually know something about bikes, and I'm sure that you can find a decent one for 500 bucks, they always have something.
