first you have to wrap your head around the concept that people sometimes choose to do things because they are more difficult or challenging.

I'm really enjoying riding fixed. Not had a bike for about fourteen years and recently got back in the saddle.
I wanted to have mine fixed because i think it's a bit of a cop out when people have a bike styed like a typical fixed gear bike, but then have a freewheel.....seems a bit half assed.
I think there are many benefits to it, like having more control, being able to brake with your feet as well as your hands etc.
I do think there are also a fair few downsides though, such as not being able to ride too close to the kerb / sidewalk and going DOWNHILL really fast gets a bit scary.
Like everything, pros and cons.
I hate it when people take the piss out of the whole 'fixie scene' – you could criticise any group of people for being into something....
- i hadn't considered going down hills.. sounds terrifying********
- I dont get what is half assed about freewheel? Is it the lack of danger?readyok

I'm not clowning on fixed gear bikes themselves, just the current uniform that seems to go hand in hand with riding them these days.
Tattoos? Check.
Dick tight pants? Check.
Cycling cap? Check.
Lock in back pocket? Check.Admittedly all breeds of cyclists have there uniform. Roadies are notorious assholes if you're not flexing appropriate gear. Mtb'ers and crossers are much more tolerant, in my experience.

Fixed gear bikes are basically a fashion accessory for a lot of people. There are some people that do amazingly insane shit riding fixed gear bikes. There is a cyclist named Sam Beal who rode the Furnace Creek 508 and the Race Across America on a fixed gear bike. I believe he holds the record in both events for fixed gear riding.

It's pretty amazing when people can ride fixed gear bikes properly, but they are fun in the sense that they are simple, and a whole different feeling when you ride. You definitely feel more connected to the bike, I still keep a brake on mine, because I can't get the hang of leaning forward and locking up the back tire to get a controlled skid stop. So, in other words, if I didn't have a brake, I wouldn't be able to stop fast enough. That's because I'm inexperienced though.

I remember getting a ton of shit for riding a fixed gear bike as a 13 year old. If you didn't have a freewheel you were an asshole. I bought a 12speed mongoose mt bike last year and I love it. I ride it all over. Function over trend.
