what would be the most common width in pixels to use when creating an emailed newsletter?

I like the Core77 newsletter
Some elements wide (ads, section titles), but the core bits are narrower, so the photos and text just fits nicely and readable on an iPhone screen...

MailChimp recommend 600px max. Don't forget that crappy email clients (Outlook) first preview emails in as super-slim preview pane:

550-600 is average recommended for viewport in email readers.

I use campaign monitor and love it. Great tools from creation through reporting.
