figure out how long it will take you to produce and execute the shoot
double or triple that and multiply by your hourly rate to compensate for processing, retouching and deliveryi would charge somewhere 150-200 if you have the gear to shoot it. if you have to rent add the rental fees
if they say it's excessive and that they can shoot their own photo for free tell them cheap isn't quality and quality isn't cheap- how do you justify 2x or 3x?Corvo2
- processing, retouching and delivery, duH!monospaced
- duh?! so is it 2x or 3x?Corvo2
- the time it takes to make the image, and the time it takes to do all the other minutia, and actually deliver are way different.baseline_shift
- i always do 2xbaseline_shift
- so there's actually a way to justify it.Corvo2
- yes. 2x hours to make the image. .5 hrs on phone. .5hrs drafting emails, .25 preparing the invoice and other paperwork. it gets to double quick.baseline_shift

Give us some more details. Do you own your own equipment, or will you rent? Do you have a studio space, or will they provide one and costs? What are the projected photo usages?

USAGE!
Standard photo business practice is to ALMOST NEVER give all rights to the image. Why?!? The VALUE of an image depends on what they use it for, not how long it took you to make the photograph. For example, say they use the image in a magazine ad in Oprah Magazine, the page rate is in the 5 figures or sometimes 6 figures for national magazine ads, you should get a cut of that, because if they didn't have your image, they wouldn't have bought that ad space..... Then, later, say they wanted to use it in a book, say the print run of the book is 10,000 copies, and each copy sells for $30, and there are 60 images in there, you should get a cut of that too.... and... well, you get the idea, they're getting a STEAL for the value of this image and you're giving up potential income, therefore the "all rights" price to any image has to account for the POTENTIAL USAGE FEES LOST.....

More on "USAGE!"...
In the very least, if the client wants "unlimited" use (which calls for a very handsome licensing fee), limit it to THEIR use / no third party use. So if a calendar company (or anyone else) wants to use it, YOU bill for additional licensing fees, not the client. Never transfer the copyright. Ever. Unless they pay you $75K per shot.
