I agree with Jersey - I saw Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and thought it was better than Up. But Up was cute. I think the kids I saw both movies with appreciated Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs more too.
I liked Russel (nature scout). I thought his character was endearing - and really appreciated the 'squirrel' bit. Reminded me way too much of my dog I guess

I hate old people and fat kids.
So this is the perfect movie for me to hate isn't it.

here's s better question for CygnusZero4...
what is your favorite pixar movie?
you keep giving heavy handed opinions without backing them up with any kind of explanation.
- let's see his portfolio as well.7point34

- Not sure what a folio has to do with a movie review, but...luckyorphan

I loved Up. Did anyone else notice the dogs playing cards gag? they breezed right past it. Also the dog's joke about the squirrel had me peeing myself. I had a sore face after this movie from laughing so much. Yeah there were alot of slapstick jokes but slapstick jokes are funny.
- If gags made movies good, Shrek would be considered excellent.luckyorphan

the dog and the squirrel. se Cy, there are 2 memorable characters right there!

I liked it, but it got boring anytime they had the talking dogs. Not funny to me (except perhaps the Squirrel bit).
The first 30 minutes were really good though. The balloons were gorgeous.
I think my favourite Pixar film is still The Incredibles.
Wall-E, Toy Story and Up come close.

i liked. some pretty sad shit throughout though.

Cygnus is almost right.
Up is definitely one of Pixar's weakest films, but I would give Cars the title of worst. Wall•E and Ratatouille were weak as well.
Up and Wall•E were both pedestrian, boring, and somewhat cop-outs, in terms of storytelling. I was never surprised by anything in either, and I found their moralizing irritating (regardless of the fact that I generally sympathized with the lessons attempted).
Up, specifically, was a nice movie, but a generally slapped together mess. I felt that the story tellers were either borderline lazy in being alright with the story, or rude in expecting that audiences would spend extensive effort reading into the story to discover a hidden allegory (I've heard many theories from friends in regards to this). And don't even try to convince me that there's anything acceptable about planes – albeit piloted by dogs – shooting real bullets at a kid in a movie.
In the end, Up fits perfectly into my belief that Pixar is an unmoored ship right now, wandering about, and trying to hold on to what they had in the days of its inception. But sadly, they lost something special when storyboard supervisor Joe Ranft died in a tragic car accident. Since his death, their short films have stunk and their features have slipped dramatically. And since Lasseter has taken over all of Disney creative, he's less involved as well. Add to that the fact that crap like Shrek makes any movie look wonderful and imaginative.
And this is coming from someone with a degree in animation, who can recite Toy Story verbatim, thinks Finding Nemo is a masterpiece, and lobbied his wife to name their kid Dash.
Help me Brad Bird...you're my only hope.

goddamn, its a kids movie. If you are able to sit through it at all then its a smashing success.
- Pixar is the first to say that they do not make kid's movies. They make movies for everyone.luckyorphan

WHAT ABOUT THE 3D?!?!?! ANYONE SEE IT WITH THE GLASSES?!?!??!

thinks Finding Nemo is a masterpiece? Easily their worst...
As for Up, although it's not their best (Incredibles, Toy Story 2, Wall-e) it's far from their worst. I took my wife and 5 year old and wasn't expecting much at all but I was emotionally devastated by the first 10 minutes when they summarise Carl's life. I found myself with tears in my eyes which really caught me by surprise. To be affected by 10 mins of animation like that seems unthinkable just a few years ago. Sure the plot's a bit thin and the talking dog concept just didn't work for me, but it's a great family film. And where Pixar continue to overshadow Dreamworks is their ability to emphaphise with the characters and to show the sad times as well as the humour so it's not just all knockabout fun. That said, my kid and I thought Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs was the best kids film we saw this year.
- Yes, Nemo = Masterpiece. It unveils itself effortlessly, with countless surprises and genius character development.luckyorphan

i watched it on an airplane with my ipod blasting music, so i can't really say whether the movie was great or not, but it sure looked depressing. how far off was i?
