Love this:
The forces of the creative industry are aligned against the artist. These forces pressure him to give his work away for free as a means of proving his worthiness of the assignment. Clients demand it. Industry associations deride it but offer alternatives that are just as costly and commoditizing. Agencies resign themselves to it. Search consultants, business development consultants and out-sourced business development services firms all earn their living by perpetuating it. And business development conferences put the worst offenders from all sides on stage and have them preach about how to get better at it.

Who will catch is the more important question?
- True, but the manifesto addresses that. The "perfect fit" will catch, apparently.era4O4

I don't know of any design studios who do spec work and also have clients that respect them. Agencies are different due to (relatively) constant cashflow and higher billings bracket. I still don't think spec work is good for anyone though. It often forces designers to rush projects that should be given more time. Even if the client buys, chances are they're buying a solution that looks/feels rushed because it *was* rushed.

I think this is due to the fact that most designers/artists/creatives don't know squat about the business side of it. So, they think doing work on spec is how it's done, when in reality it destroys the industry.
I'm not really surprised to see more contests, more spec work popping up from fortune 500 companies, it's our responsibility to educate ourselves and see that this is an unsustainable practice on our end.

We recently did some pitch work that we were paid for regardless of the outcome.
But that doesnt happen very often does it :(

the article is talking more about the whole pitching process, not whether or not you're compensated for the few days or hours usually spent on the pitch.
The results from pitches like that are usually poorly thought out, or generic, or crappy in some other way. Then the client picks from among that quick crap and then the winning designer has to make something from his crap, even though his initial concept was poorly researched, poorly planned because he can't afford to spend too much time on it. So that process leads to a crappier end result.
That's what he's talking about.

this pitch vs no pitch is a balance each professional has to reach for themselves. dealing in absolutes is a recipe for failure for everyone. at some point no matter who you are you'll be flossing your teeth with tiny corporate cock to stay in business.
