I don't know of any design studios who do spec work and also have clients that respect them. Agencies are different due to (relatively) constant cashflow and higher billings bracket. I still don't think spec work is good for anyone though. It often forces designers to rush projects that should be given more time. Even if the client buys, chances are they're buying a solution that looks/feels rushed because it *was* rushed.
